Chelsea
Chelsea has been dealt a significant blow as Enzo Maresca has confirmed that a key player will no longer be part of the squad. Maresca stated the player will miss today’s game and future matches, explaining, “He is a good player, but with so many midfield options, he would struggle for minutes.”
Maresca explained, “Carney won’t feature in today’s match; he’s a talented player, but we have many midfielders, so it will be hard for him to get minutes.”
Chukwuemeka, who joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022, has had limited opportunities to play regularly, making just a few appearances this season.
Maresca has previously suggested that Chukwuemeka would benefit from regular game time elsewhere, indicating that a loan move might be the best option for his growth. In September 2024, Maresca remarked, “I really, really like Carney. The issue is that we have so many attacking midfielders, so he will find it tough to get into the team.”
Multiple clubs have shown interest in Chukwuemeka. West Ham United, looking to strengthen their midfield, have been linked with both Chukwuemeka and Chelsea teammate Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Reports indicate that West Ham is considering loan deals for the two players to bolster their squad during a challenging Premier League season.
Furthermore, clubs from Europe have also expressed interest in Chukwuemeka. Italian club Torino reportedly targeted him during the summer transfer window, though a transfer did not take place. Chelsea is open to offers for Chukwuemeka, with discussions around a potential £40 million transfer fee.
Maresca’s recent statements highlight the competitiveness of Chelsea’s midfield, which includes players such as Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Romeo Lavia.
This strong competition has limited Chukwuemeka’s chances, making a move in January more likely. Maresca remarked, “There are players who haven’t played much in all competitions… They are probably the first to want to leave because they work hard every day and want to play.”
As the January transfer window unfolds, clubs seeking midfield reinforcements will closely monitor Chukwuemeka’s situation. A move could give him the regular playing time he needs to continue his development and reach the potential that led Chelsea to sign him from Aston Villa.
