How Chelsea ruined Victor Osimhen deal after coming ‘very close’ to landing him last summer
Chelsea seemed poised to secure Victor Osimhen’s signature last summer, but despite being so close, the deal ultimately fell apart. The club had agreed to personal terms with Osimhen, and only minor details, such as medical exams and paperwork, were left to finalize the transfer. However, time constraints prevented the deal from being completed. John Obi Mikel, who had knowledge of the negotiations, revealed that both Chelsea and Osimhen were eager to finalize the move, and there is still a chance for discussions to resume in the future.
The primary obstacle, however, was financial. Chelsea stepped away from the deal due to Osimhen’s high wage demands and a release clause valued between €75-120 million, contingent on Napoli’s flexibility in negotiations. This hefty price tag deterred not only Chelsea but also Paris Saint-Germain, with Manchester United and Saudi clubs emerging as some of the final competitors for his signature.
A journalist familiar with Osimhen’s situation stated that while Napoli frustrated numerous clubs pursuing the striker, Chelsea had a clear opportunity to sign him but ultimately “messed up” the deal. The failed negotiations left Chelsea without a top-tier striker for the season, a situation that may prove costly as they struggle to find the back of the net.
Despite missing out, the opportunity isn’t completely lost. As the summer transfer window nears, Chelsea might revisit their interest in Osimhen, provided they can meet his financial demands and successfully finalize the transfer.
