Real Madrid will need to manage without Eduardo Camavinga in their upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against Arsenal, as the midfielder received a third yellow card of the season during their 3-0 loss.

Arsenal were dominant over the Spanish side in north London, taking a crucial step toward the semi-finals. Declan Rice scored two spectacular free-kicks, marking his first at the senior level, while Mikel Merino added a third goal. Both Arsenal and Madrid entered Tuesday’s match with concerns over potential suspensions for the return leg in Spain.
Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice, and Jurrien Timber were at risk of suspension with two yellow cards each, while Madrid had six players in a similar situation. Unfortunately for Carlo Ancelotti, Camavinga received a yellow for a tackle on Bukayo Saka and got a second yellow in stoppage time, meaning he will miss the match at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.
For Arsenal, Mikel Arteta will have no suspensions to worry about for the next leg, as his three players with two yellow cards managed to stay disciplined. Moreover, as per the UEFA Champions League website, yellow cards do not carry over beyond this stage. As stated in Article 63.04 of the UEFA Champions League Regulations, “all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals. They are not carried forward to the semi-finals.”

This means players such as Mikel Merino, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ben White, David Raya, and Jakub Kiwior, who each have one yellow card, will not face suspension for the semi-finals if they are booked in the upcoming matches, assuming they advance. The regulations state that “single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward to the next stage of the competition,” except after the quarter-finals.
Additionally, there are concerns about the fitness of Bukayo Saka and Rice, as both received on-field treatment from the club’s physio before being substituted in the latter stages of the match. The Gunners will face Brentford on Saturday night in the Premier League before traveling to Spain four days later. Arteta is likely to rotate his squad to rest key players.
