Authorities have just released more information following an in-depth review of the evidence surrounding the incident — and what they now believe happened is both revealing and unexpected.
The incident that happened in the early morning hours of July 3, 2025, on the A-52 motorway close to Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain, has deeply impacted the football world and wider public. Findings from the Spanish Civil Guard, derived from careful examination of physical traces, testimonies from witnesses, and forensic investigations, provide a more detailed understanding of the crash, showing both anticipated and unexpected aspects.
The collision occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. when the Lamborghini Huracan, operated by Diogo Jota, went out of control under extreme conditions. Authorities have concluded that the car was moving at a speed well above the 120 kph (74 mph) legal limit. Early reports indicate the vehicle was going so fast that maintaining control—especially during a risky overtaking attempt—became nearly impossible.
One major element in the crash was a tire blowout, which appears to have caused the car to become unstable. Tire marks located at the location of the accident suggest that Jota tried to recover control, but the vehicle left the roadway, collided with an embankment, and burst into flames. The blaze was so severe it reached nearby plant life, making rescue operations more difficult at first.
Diogo Jota and André Silva’s identities were established through documents discovered at the location and the car’s license plate, as the fire had nearly completely destroyed the vehicle. Forensic experts worked carefully to reconstruct the events by examining the debris and markings on the road.
The inquiry also considered whether the condition of the road or mechanical problems, aside from the tire issue, had any involvement. Even though the A-52 was reported to be in good shape, it appears that both the high speed and the unexpected tire blowout were the main causes of the crash.
Officials are putting together a detailed report for the Puebla de Sanabria court, which will inform any upcoming legal steps. The conclusions have sparked discussion about driving safety and the dangers tied to high-performance cars, especially when operated at very high speeds.
The deaths of Jota, widely admired for his talent and commitment on the field, and his brother have left fans, fellow players, and loved ones grieving, with tributes still arriving from around the world. The outcome of the investigation highlights the tragic impact that quick decisions behind the wheel can have.
