Fabrizio Romano reveals the disciplinary action Manchester United Board took against Alejandro Garnacho after Garnacho made a post online wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Rashford’s name on it while on holiday
Manchester United have taken disciplinary measures against winger Alejandro Garnacho after his contentious Instagram post on June 22, 2025, in which he appeared wearing an Aston Villa jersey featuring Marcus Rashford’s name and number while vacationing in Ibiza.
The 20-year-old’s upload, which triggered outrage among supporters and was seen as a slight toward manager Ruben Amorim, prompted a strong reaction from the club’s hierarchy, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano on June 23, 2025.
Despite fans expecting a more relaxed response, United have issued a fine and removed Garnacho from their U.S. pre-season tour, signaling a strict approach to his conduct.
Garnacho’s image, one of several holiday photos, was instantly met with criticism, with online supporters calling it “disrespectful” and “madness” for a United player to don a rival team’s kit—especially with Rashford’s name, given he’s on loan at Aston Villa after clashing with Amorim.
Romano, writing in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter, reported that the United hierarchy was “seething” and responded promptly—fining Garnacho a confidential amount and confirming he will train solo at Carrington alongside others like Antony and Jadon Sancho, should he fail to secure a move before the tour begins in July.
Romano also noted that the club interpreted the post as an intentional provocation, rather than a simple show of support for Rashford, despite what some sources told BBC Sport.
The reaction online was swift, with users like @MUFCTruth stating, “Garnacho’s done himself no favors—time to go!” Others, such as @RedDevilsForever, offered more nuanced views, acknowledging his 11 goals and 10 assists across 58 appearances last season while still criticizing his behavior. Ex-Watford skipper Troy Deeney even told talkSPORT that Bruno Fernandes should “smash” Garnacho in training, calling him a “little dope.”
The punishment fits within Amorim’s uncompromising squad shake-up, with Garnacho, Rashford, Sancho, and Antony all made available for transfer—though Garnacho’s £50 million switch to Arsenal is reportedly finalized, potentially easing the situation.
According to Romano, United’s actions reflect an effort to address unrest in the squad, especially following a 15th-place league finish and a Europa League final defeat. With £295.5 million spent on Harry Kane, Viktor Gyökeres, and Bryan Mbeumo, the leadership is focused on maintaining unity.
Fan opinions remain split—some call for tougher penalties, while others regret the departure of a talent like Garnacho, whose move to Arsenal may be hard to accept
