Arsenal’s hopes of clinching the title suffered another blow on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion.

This match marked the first Premier League game since Kai Havertz’s arrival where Mikel Arteta’s side played without key players Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Havertz, all of whom were among the top four goal scorers for Arsenal last season. Their absence was evident, with the team struggling to generate clear attacking chances.

In the previous season, Arsenal netted 91 goals in the Premier League, their highest tally since their 1952/53 title-winning season.

They also made history by becoming the first team in Premier League history to score five or more goals in six different away games within a single calendar year (2024), surpassing records previously held by Sunderland (1892) and Manchester City (1937).

However, this season, Arsenal has been held to zero or one goal in nine of their 20 league matches, while league leaders Liverpool have only experienced this twice, highlighting the need for attacking reinforcements, especially with Saka out for “more than two months.”

Arsenal Targeting Bundesliga Winger

With Saka injured and Ethan Nwaneri—who scored against Brighton—also sidelined, Arsenal’s need for new signings this winter has become even more pressing. According to Football Insider’s Connor Humm, the Gunners are targeting Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman.

Currently valued at £28 million, Coman is contracted with Bayern until June 2027.

Coman’s reputation as a “serial winner” could significantly strengthen Arsenal’s squad.

European football analyst Zach Lowy has highlighted that Coman has won league titles in each of his first 11 professional seasons—two with Paris Saint-Germain, one with Juventus, and eight with Bayern Munich. This experience could greatly aid Arsenal in their pursuit of silverware.

No player has won titles across all four of Europe’s “big five” leagues, a stat that Arsenal fans hope could change if Coman joins the team this month.

While any winger Arsenal brings in during January will face the challenge of replicating Saka’s impact, a comparison between the two reveals similarities in their playing styles. According to FBRef’s “similar players” feature, Saka and Coman are among the most comparable players in Europe’s top leagues.

Since August 2022, Saka has played twice as many minutes as Coman, resulting in higher goal and assist totals, along with a strong +9.2 goals minus expected goals (xG) figure. While it’s unlikely Arsenal will find a player on Saka’s level in January, Coman’s stats indicate he could still be a worthwhile addition.

Coman has completed nearly half of his attempted dribbles, a notable contrast to Gabriel Martinelli, who has faced some criticism for his recent performances.

Coman also surpasses Saka in progressive carries per 90 minutes, potentially offering a new dimension to Arsenal’s attack. With four goals in just 885 minutes of play this season, Coman’s goal-scoring ability could enhance Arsenal’s offensive options.

Although Coman might not be Arteta’s ideal long-term choice, he could still provide valuable contributions if signed this month.
