Darwin Nunez Fortunate to Escape Red Card in Liverpool’s 2-0 Win Over Brentford
Arne Slot’s Liverpool preserved their lead at the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
However, some supporters feel Darwin Nunez, who scored both goals in stoppage time, was fortunate to avoid being sent off. Thomas Frank’s Brentford, now sitting 11th in the league, put up a disciplined display at the Gtech Community Stadium but were undone by Nunez’s late efforts.
The 33-cap Uruguayan forward, who has netted 13 goals for his national team, entered the game in the 65th minute, replacing Luis Diaz.
After limited playing time this season, Nunez made the most of his opportunity to impress ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming match with Lille.
Nunez broke the deadlock in the 91st minute, finishing off a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to shock the home side.
Just two minutes later, he sealed the win with a calm finish, quieting his critics and securing the full three points for his side.
However, controversy arose in the 95th minute when Nunez made a reckless challenge on Brentford’s Nathan Collins as the defender tried to clear the ball.
Despite the dangerous tackle, the Liverpool forward escaped without receiving a second yellow card.
While Liverpool fans will be pleased with the three points, many feel Nunez was lucky to avoid further discipline.
The 25-year-old has had a difficult season since Arne Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, falling behind players like Diaz and Diogo Jota in the pecking order.
With 37 goals and 21 assists in 122 appearances for Liverpool, Nunez’s impact is clear, but he has struggled to find consistency under Slot’s guidance.
