Premier League release statement following ‘craziest’ foul of the season during Brighton vs Arsenal
João Pedro’s penalty ensured a hard-fought 1-1 draw for Brighton against Arsenal after a controversial moment at the Amex Stadium. The penalty was given following an incident where William Saliba was deemed to have unintentionally headbutted Pedro in the box while challenging for a high ball.
Referee Anthony Taylor immediately signaled for a penalty, and after a VAR check, the call was confirmed. The Premier League later released a statement affirming the decision:
“The referee’s penalty decision for a foul by Saliba on João Pedro was reviewed and upheld by VAR, which concluded there was sufficient contact to justify the penalty.”
Arsenal had taken the lead in the first half with a goal from Ethan Nwaneri, but a composed penalty by Pedro in the second half leveled the score, and the match ended in a draw.
The incident sparked a lively debate among fans on social media, with differing opinions on the penalty’s fairness. One fan remarked, “It’s just like any other tackle. The ball was there to be won, Pedro got to it first, and Saliba was late. Correct call.”
Others disagreed, with one saying, “That’s such a soft penalty. Saliba was going for the header, and there was only the slightest contact with João Pedro’s head.”
There were also defenders of the referee’s decision, with one comment stating, “Not sure why there’s any complaints about that penalty. Saliba heads João Pedro and misses the ball completely… Clear penalty.”
The draw means Arsenal now trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by just one point, while Brighton climbed to 10th in the table.
