Reporter in Anfield press box reveals Liverpool fan’s foul-mouthed comment at Trent Alexander-Arnold and it speaks volumes
Amid ongoing rumors linking him to Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold endured a challenging match against Manchester United on Sunday.
A well-regarded Liverpool journalist reported that Alexander-Arnold was subjected to an angry outburst after his involvement in Manchester United’s opening goal at Anfield.
Lisandro Martinez gave United the lead with a powerful strike shortly after halftime, and Alexander-Arnold had a poor moment in the build-up. He lost possession of the ball carelessly and was slow to recover when Bruno Fernandes passed to Martinez.
Just days after Real Madrid’s reported £20 million bid was rejected, Alexander-Arnold’s performance was significantly below his usual standard, with United focusing their attacks on his side.
Amid growing speculation about his future, some Liverpool fans seem to have turned against the England international. According to Lewis Steele, a Merseyside football reporter for the Daily Mail, one supporter near the press box shouted, “If you don’t wanna be here Trent, f*** off!” after United’s first goal. Another fan reportedly told Alexander-Arnold to “f*** off out of here,” while he also mentioned that the 26-year-old appeared a “troubled soul” when sitting on the bench after being substituted.
His display and ongoing contract situation were major topics of discussion during the post-match analysis on Sky Sports, where Jamie Carragher, Daniel Sturridge, and Gary Neville engaged in a heated debate, with Roy Keane suggesting Alexander-Arnold should consider moving to the 15-time European champions.
The panel also discussed whether the recent Real Madrid rumors had affected his performance.
However, Arne Slot dismissed any suggestion that Alexander-Arnold’s mentality was an issue. While he acknowledged it wasn’t his “best game,” Slot defended his performance, explaining that Fernandes and Diogo Dalot’s combination on his side was difficult to handle.
“I think Trent has played mostly very good games for this club,” Slot told Sky Sports. “There probably have been games when he wasn’t at his best; today wasn’t his best, but that probably had something to do with them as well.”
“Especially in the first half, sometimes Ryan wasn’t close enough to him, so he was sometimes in a two-vs-one situation as well. I would put it more on the performance of Dalot and Bruno Fernandes than it being down to Trent.”
Liverpool will return to action on Wednesday when they face Spurs in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, before hosting Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup on Sunday.
