Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is determined to bring in a top-class striker during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils appear to have a clear path to signing Victor Osimhen, as Napoli’s star forward has seen his main suitors unexpectedly pull out of the race. However, a potential swap involving a struggling Manchester United forward is no longer an option, according to David Ornstein.

Manchester United’s attacking struggles this season have been evident, with the team managing just 37 goals in their 29 Premier League matches so far. That total is three fewer than relegation-threatened Wolves and a massive 32 behind league leaders Liverpool, who have played the same number of games.

As a result, Amorim, alongside technical director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, has made signing a new No.9 a key priority for the summer. The goal is to recruit a high-caliber striker who can lead the line in the manager’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

To achieve this, a report last week outlined four possible targets for the Red Devils, with Osimhen appearing alongside Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Hugo Ekitike on their shortlist.

Recent claims suggest that, among these four, Amorim’s preferred signing would be Osimhen. The Nigerian forward has demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess across multiple leagues—Belgium, France, Italy, and now Turkey—netting an impressive 140 goals in 258 career appearances.

With Osimhen’s departure from Napoli almost inevitable this summer, his release clause has reportedly been reduced to €75m (£62.7m, $81m), making him an attractive prospect for potential suitors.

The club most heavily linked with signing him had been PSG, who were reportedly eager to reunite him with his former Napoli teammate, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, Sky reporter Sacha Tavolieri has now stated that PSG have withdrawn from the race after their manager, Luis Enrique, decided he is satisfied with his current attacking options. While Chelsea could still make a late move for the prolific Nigerian, it is believed that United will have an open path to securing his signature if they act swiftly.

Manchester United’s pursuit of Osimhen had also been fueled by speculation that Napoli might explore a swap deal with them. In recent weeks, names such as Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Joshua Zirkzee have all been linked with a move to the Italian club.

However, renowned journalist Ornstein has recently dismissed the idea of Danish forward Hojlund—who has endured a difficult season and suffered a 20-game goal drought—being part of any potential exchange.

“Certainly an interesting proposition, but I’m not sure how realistic it is,” said the transfer insider on Sky’s *Back Pages* podcast. “Manchester United spent £70m+ on Hojlund. My presumption is they’ll be wanting to build with him, rather than bringing in a much older striker in what would be a complicated deal.”

“I do expect Osimhen to be on the move, given that Napoli let him go to Galatasaray and the future is really uncertain for him there. And United have been linked, but I’m not sure how realistic it is that United would let go of Hojlund. He is one who would raise some funds, but he would not produce a profit on the book value that he represents.”

Indicating that United may seek alternative ways to raise funds, Ornstein concluded: “So I think it’s more likely that United will raise funds from elsewhere, as attractive a deal as that might sound for transfer lovers.”
