Arne Slot is now in a position where he must finally promote a standout young talent from Liverpool’s ranks.

A gifted player from the academy could be the key to helping Liverpool recover from a significant injury setback. With Slot’s squad facing yet another wave of injury concerns, one promising talent may have the opportunity to turn the season around.

The disappointment of Tuesday night’s Champions League exit was just the start of Slot’s problems. The Liverpool manager is also dealing with fresh injury issues, as both Ibrahima Konaté and Trent Alexander-Arnold were forced off during the defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield.

While Konaté’s injury may not be severe, Alexander-Arnold’s availability remains uncertain. With Conor Bradley also sidelined, Slot’s options at right-back are limited. Jarell Quansah filled in against PSG and delivered a solid performance, but right-back is not his natural position.

However, there is an academy player who may be a better fit.

### Why James McConnell Could Solve Slot’s Selection Dilemma

James McConnell is the player in question. Last month, he played as a right-back in the FA Cup against Plymouth, one of several occasions he has taken on that role.

Having gained experience as a right-back at U21 and U18 levels, McConnell is comfortable in a wide position and could be an effective solution for Slot. With a tough Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United approaching, he could provide a valuable alternative.

Although Quansah is likely to start, McConnell offers Slot another tactical option. He would not be thrown into a high-pressure situation unprepared.

This is the same stage where McConnell impressed last year, coming off the bench in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea and holding his own against Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández. He is fully capable of delivering a strong performance in a different role.

Beyond the immediate need, McConnell’s future at Liverpool looks bright. As a midfielder, he is highly regarded at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp saw his potential, and Slot shares that belief.

Following a PSV match in January, Slot praised McConnell’s performance in a press conference, making it clear that he intends to keep him with the squad and give him more first-team opportunities.

“There is definitely one of them that will not go on loan,” Slot remarked.

“I think you know which one I mean. James McConnell. I wouldn’t say definitely, but I liked him a lot today, so maybe now the end result today would be it’d be good for him to go somewhere and play.

“He was also a player that hasn’t played in the last six or seven months 90 minutes because he was injured for a while. He impressed me a lot today.”

Liverpool’s performance against PSG made it clear that another midfielder is needed to support Ryan Gravenberch. While the Dutchman is an excellent player, he has been overworked and needs rest.

McConnell is more than capable of stepping in. A talented midfielder with a bright future, he now has an ideal opportunity to establish himself in the squad as the Premier League title race nears its conclusion.

In the long run, McConnell could save Liverpool a substantial transfer fee. Rather than spending heavily on another midfielder, Slot could look within the club for a solution.

It is clear that he values McConnell, and with Liverpool’s Champions League exit effectively ending their season—aside from the Carabao Cup final—this could be the perfect time to focus on developing the next generation.
