Chelsea’s academy continues to develop exciting prospects this season, with numerous young players striving to secure a spot in the first team.

Earlier in the season, there were concerns at Cobham regarding the limited opportunities for progression to the first team. This issue contributed to Rio Ngumoha’s decision to move to Liverpool over the summer.

Despite this, many of Chelsea’s young talents have impressed, even competing in age groups above their own. Earlier this year, the U18s fielded players as young as 14 in a win over Leicester in the U18 Premier League.

Several standout performers have also earned chances to train and play with the senior squad. Notably, Shumaira Mheuka became the youngest player to start a European match for Chelsea, and he could feature in the upcoming Conference League quarter-final match in Warsaw.

It has also been a significant week for the U21 team, who faced Burnley in the Premier League Cup quarter-final. Despite losing 2-0, 16-year-old striker Chizzy Ezenwata started the match, highlighting his exceptional form this season.

Ezenwata has netted 10 goals for the U18s, including strikes in the FA Youth Cup. His development has not gone unnoticed.

In a recent incident, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca is said to have cancelled a rest day for the first team after academy players outperformed them in training. Ezenwata was among the players who scored in that session, demonstrating the disparity in intensity and form.

That wake-up call seemed to have the desired effect, as the senior team responded with a solid win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. With opportunities arising in the Conference League, Ezenwata might still get his chance with the senior squad before the season concludes.
