**BREAKING NEWS**: Premier League released official statement, overturned Everton’s penalty and suspended the referee from officiating Arsenal matches indefinitely. Published 2 days ago on April 5, 2025 By Destiny Omodion

The Premier League has issued a ruling on the controversial penalty awarded to Everton against Arsenal.

Arsenal were leading 1-0 at halftime during their Premier League match at Goodison Park on Saturday. However, Mikel Arteta’s side were equalized just minutes into the second half.

Iliman Ndiaye converted a penalty after Myles Lewis-Skelly was judged to have fouled Jack Harrison. Ndiaye’s penalty turned out to be the only goal of the second half, with the match finishing 1-1.

The decision caused controversy as the initial contact appeared to be outside the box, and Lewis-Skelly appeared to release Harrison before going to ground.

VAR reviewed the incident but did not recommend that referee Darren England conduct an on-field review.

Following the decision, the Premier League Match Centre posted a statement on X, which said: “The referee’s penalty decision for the challenge by Lewis-Skelly on Harrison was reviewed and confirmed by VAR – with the contact deemed to be sufficient for a penalty and within the area.”

Lucy Ward, the former Leeds women’s striker providing commentary on TNT Sports, supported the decision. She stated: “Myles Lewis-Skelly misjudged the bounce and was always second best to reach it. Ndiaye had to wait a long time but remained calm and sent Raya the wrong way.”

Arsenal entered the match 12 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, knowing they could afford no more dropped points if they were to have any chance of catching Arne Slot’s Reds.

The draw has given Everton’s Merseyside rivals another boost ahead of their match against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Slot’s team now need only 11 points from their remaining eight matches to secure the title.

Fans took to X to express their reactions to the result, with one user stating: “It’s over, congratulations Liverpool on the title..!” Another joked: “Everton handing Liverpool the title in just three days.” A third said: “You can already give the title to Liverpool.”
