Marcus Rashford links possible Manchester United return to Ex-manager appointment

Marcus Rashford has reportedly indicated he would consider a return to Manchester United, but only if the club appoints former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær as head coach.

According to sources close to the England forward, Rashford reacted strongly to news of Rúben Amorim’s dismissal, viewing it as a potential turning point in the club’s recent turmoil. The 26-year-old is understood to believe that Solskjær remains the most suitable figure to lead a long-term rebuild at Old Trafford.

Rashford is reported to have said that seeing Amorim sacked made him feel it was “time to return home”, but only if Solskjær is reinstated as manager, describing the Norwegian as “the only one capable of rebuilding the club properly”.

Belief in Solskjær’s leadership

Rashford worked closely with Solskjær during his most productive spell at Manchester United, enjoying some of his best form under the former striker. During that period, Rashford became a central figure in the team, both on and off the pitch.

Sources suggest Rashford believes Solskjær:

• Understands the culture and expectations of the club
• Trusts young and attacking players
• Can rebuild confidence in a fractured dressing room
• Offers stability after years of managerial turnover

Rashford is said to view any alternative appointment as another short-term solution that would delay meaningful progress.

Context of Amorim’s dismissal

Amorim was dismissed earlier this week following growing tension between the coaching staff and club hierarchy, alongside inconsistent performances on the pitch. His exit has sparked widespread debate about Manchester United’s long-term strategy and the effectiveness of their leadership structure under INEOS.

The fallout has also led to reported unrest among senior players, with concerns raised about direction, stability and communication from the board.

Manchester United response

Manchester United have not commented on Rashford’s reported remarks or on the possibility of Solskjær returning to the club. The former manager has also not spoken publicly about any potential comeback.

INEOS are currently assessing both interim and permanent managerial options as they attempt to stabilise the club and restore confidence within the squad.

What this could mean

Rashford remains one of the club’s most recognisable academy graduates and his comments, if confirmed, underline the emotional and symbolic importance of the next managerial appointment.

While any return would depend on multiple factors, including contractual and sporting considerations, Rashford’s stance highlights the influence Solskjær continues to hold among former and current players.

As Manchester United weigh their next move, the pressure is growing on the board to deliver a decision that restores belief — not just among supporters, but within the dressing room itself.
