BREAKING NEWS: Rio Ferdinand Fumes as “Super Sub” Role Sparks Fears of Another United Talent “Wasted”.

The Manchester United “revival” under Michael Carrick has hit its first internal road bump. Despite United extending their unbeaten run with a dramatic 1-1 draw at West Ham on Tuesday, club legend Rio Ferdinand is reportedly “unhappy” and “concerned” about the treatment of £74m striker Benjamin Sesko.

While Sesko has become United’s “Late Goal King,” Ferdinand warns that keeping the Slovenian on the bench is a gamble that could “ruin his career” just as the previous regime nearly stifled Kobbie Mainoo.

“He Doesn’t Deserve to Waste on the Bench”

Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast following the West Ham stalemate, the former United captain didn’t hold back. While he praised Carrick’s results, he questioned the tactical decision to keep United’s most clinical finisher out of the starting XI for three consecutive games.

“I really feel for him at the moment. His type of player—a young, elite striker with that much potential—doesn’t deserve to waste away on the bench. Michael Carrick is doing a great job, but he’s risking ruining his confidence. We saw it with Amorim and Mainoo, and now it’s happening with Sesko. He’s saved the team twice in ten days… how much more does he have to do to earn a start?”

THE “SUPER SUB” DILEMMA:‼️ Stats vs. Status

The friction comes down to Carrick’s “Unchanged XI” policy. For the last three matches, Carrick has stuck with a frontline of Amad, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha, leaving Sesko to provide the fireworks late in the game.

• The Impact: Sesko scored the 93rd-minute winner against Fulham and followed it up with a 96th-minute equalizer at the London Stadium on Tuesday.

• The “Balance” Defense: Carrick addressed the benching after the West Ham game, stating: “Ben’s doing a lot of work and he’s in a good place… it’s just managing the balance. The boys who started have done fantastically well.”

• The Comparison: Ferdinand’s reference to Kobbie Mainoo is a sting to the previous Ruben Amorim era, where the young midfielder struggled for consistent starts before Carrick restored him as the “heartbeat” of the team.

SESKO “NOT HAPPY” REGARDING DRAW:‼️ The Striker Speaks

While Sesko has remained professional, his post-match interview with TNT Sports suggested a growing hunger for more than just a cameo role. “I’m happy with the finish, but I’m not happy with the draw,” Sesko admitted, pointedly adding that he is “looking forward to more moments”—a clear signal to his manager that he is ready for 90 minutes.

With United staying in 4th place—just one point ahead of Chelsea—the pressure to unleash Sesko from the start against Everton (Feb 23) is reaching a fever pitch.

Is Michael Carrick right to keep Sesko as a “Secret Weapon,” or is Rio Ferdinand right that the striker is being “treated badly”?
