The Amex Controversy: “Was He Truly Offside?”

The “Title Defense” for Liverpool F.C. hit a “nuclear” roadblock on Saturday afternoon as the Reds slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion. While the headlines are full of Hugo Ekitiké’s heartbreaking injury and Arne Slot’s mounting pressure, one moment has left the traveling Kop “absolutely fuming.”

In the 56th minute, Danny Welbeck tapped home his second goal of the game after a cross from Yankuba Minteh was headed back across the box by Jack Hinshelwood. Liverpool’s defense, led by Virgil van Dijk, immediately signaled for offside, and the Amex Stadium fell into a “tense and suffocating” silence as VAR began its review.

The Official VAR Proof: “The Elbow Rule” Strikes Again!

Reports are now circulating that the Premier League and PGMOL have shared the “semi-automated offside” lines with Liverpool officials to explain why the goal was allowed to stand.

Images flashed on the broadcast and later confirmed to the club show that Welbeck was in an “incredibly tight” position. The “OFFICIAL proof” reportedly shows that while Welbeck’s forearm and hand were ahead of the ball, these parts of the body cannot score a goal and are therefore ignored for offside. His shoulder and torso were found to be level with the ball at the exact moment Hinshelwood made contact.

“LIVERPOOL GIVEN FULL EXPLANATION ON CONTROVERSIAL GOAL!” ‼️

Danny Welbeck’s Reaction: “I Have VAR PTSD!”

The 35-year-old striker, who is currently enjoying the most “prolific season of his career” with 12 Premier League goals, admitted that the wait for the VAR confirmation “takes the joy out of the game.”

“It’s so annoying, honestly,” Welbeck told reporters after the match. “I think I have a bit of PTSD because against Fulham I celebrated wildly and I was offside by like an elbow. You want to celebrate, but you don’t know if you’re offside so you have to wait for the screen.”

Fans React: “The Lines Don’t Lie or Sabotage?”

The Liverpool faithful are divided, with many feeling that the “5cm tolerance” rule is the only reason they didn’t walk away with a point.

• “The camera angle was all wrong. You could argue his torso was over the line! This feels like another robbery against us,” one fan tweeted.

• “We can’t blame VAR for this. Our defense was sleeping and Welbeck was unmarked. The stats show he was onside by a hair,” another countered.

What’s Next? The PSG Titanic and the Top 4 Race

With Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker already sidelined, and Hugo Ekitiké now facing a spell on the treatment table with a severe dead leg, Liverpool must find a way to “rebuild” during the international break. A defining Champions League Quarter-Final against Paris Saint-Germain is on the horizon, and there will be “no room for error” or “VAR excuses” there.

THE GOAL STANDS — BUT THE DEBATE WILL RAGE ON!
