Anfield has been rocked to its foundations this morning. In what is undoubtedly the biggest managerial bombshell of the summer, Liverpool Football Club and head coach Arne Slot have officially parted ways with immediate effect. The announcement, broken by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, has sent shockwaves across the footballing world — and has immediately triggered a frenzy of speculation over who will lead one of the world’s greatest clubs into a new era.

Arne Slot is to leave Liverpool with immediate effect. The Reds manager, who has been under intense pressure after an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign, will depart the club. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool made the decision to part company with Slot after a turbulent season that saw the Merseysiders narrowly secure their place in the Champions League after finishing a disappointing fifth place in the Premier League table.

The end, when it came, was swift and decisive. The club that is historically reluctant to sack managers had seen enough.

A Season That Unravelled

To understand how it came to this, one must look back at a campaign that began with enormous promise — and rapidly descended into a crisis of confidence, results, and dressing room unrest. After winning the Premier League title in his first season at Anfield, Slot faced far greater tests during his second campaign. A record-breaking summer spending spree that brought in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong conspicuously failed to pay dividends.

The warning signs were glaring. Liverpool found the going extremely tough in 2025-26, falling well adrift of league leaders Arsenal. Slot’s ongoing presence became the subject of intense debate — especially with former Reds star Xabi Alonso having become available following his dismissal by Real Madrid, and Jurgen Klopp said to be considering a return to management if the right offer came along.

The atmosphere inside the dressing room soured visibly. Liverpool haven’t won a single game that Mohamed Salah sat out in 2026, and Slot’s decision to bench him for both legs of the Champions League quarter-final loss to Paris Saint-Germain was made to look utterly ridiculous — no Red created more chances against Luis Enrique’s side despite the fact that the forward was only on the pitch for 59 of the 180 minutes played.

The final humiliation came when the squad appeared to turn publicly on their own manager. The fact that so many Liverpool players liked or commented on Mohamed Salah’s social media posts criticising Slot and the slipping standards at the club strongly suggested the players wanted him gone.

FSG’s U-Turn

For much of the season, Fenway Sports Group maintained a wall of public support around their manager. Sources repeatedly briefed that Slot would be given time and backing. But as the weeks wore on and the defeats mounted, the mood in the boardroom shifted dramatically. Reports emerged that the Liverpool board had made the decision not to continue with Arne Slot as manager for the 2026-27 season. Having previously opted to give Slot more time to turn things around, the decision to sack Slot was made following conversations with senior players.

It was expected that the club would undergo a season review after a hugely disappointing title defence during Slot’s second season in charge. The Dutchman ultimately leaves having won the club’s third league title of the 21st century — a significant legacy — but one overshadowed by what followed.

Iraola: The Man FSG Want

Now, all eyes turn to the succession. And the name sitting at the very top of Liverpool’s wish list is one that has been building in stature for the past three years: Andoni Iraola.

Fabrizio Romano has named the former Bournemouth head coach as the current favourite to fill the hot seat at Anfield. The 43-year-old Spaniard departed the Vitality Stadium at the end of the season, and his exit from Bournemouth was anything but a quiet one.

Iraola led the Cherries to Europe for the first time in their history, and his decision to leave Dean Court came despite that remarkable achievement — having secured European football for the club after a thrilling final-day campaign.

The Liverpool connection runs deeper than football philosophy alone. One of the key decision-makers in the Liverpool hierarchy is Sporting Director Richard Hughes — the very man who brought Andoni Iraola to Bournemouth in the first place. That trust, built over years of collaboration, could prove decisive in the coming days.

And crucially, Iraola himself has made no secret of his interest. Sky Sports reported that talks between Iraola and AC Milan were “not progressing,” and that Iraola is instead interested in joining either Liverpool or Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The timeline at Liverpool has opened the door for an Iraola move — particularly since Xabi Alonso, another potential Slot replacement, was snapped up by Chelsea, leaving Liverpool at risk of losing their top managerial targets one by one if they waited too long to act.

What Iraola Would Bring

For those unfamiliar with Iraola’s methods, his three seasons at Bournemouth tell a compelling story. After spending just two-and-a-half years at the south coast club, Iraola became a crowd favourite for the remarkable success he achieved. His stock rose consistently after Bournemouth’s performances — finishing 12th, ninth, and then sixth in the Premier League in his three seasons — and his recruitment record has been outstanding.

His style of play is intense, proactive, and built on collective spirit — precisely the qualities Liverpool supporters crave after a season of stagnation and drift under Slot. High pressing, vertical football, and a fierce work ethic have become his trademarks.

A New Era Begins

As news spread this Saturday morning, the reaction from the Liverpool fanbase has been one of mixed emotion — sadness at the manner of Slot’s departure, but cautious optimism about what comes next. The hope is that FSG, having been stung by their hesitancy over Xabi Alonso, do not delay in making their move for Iraola.

Anfield does not stand still for long. A historic football club demands a historic response. And if Andoni Iraola does indeed walk through those famous doors, he will do so knowing he inherits a squad packed with world-class talent — talent that simply needs the right leader to unlock it.

The search is on. The pressure is immense. And for FSG, the biggest decision in years must now be made without hesitation.
