BREAKING NEWS: “The Criticism I’ve Received Is Enough to End Any Player’s Career” — Manuel Ugarte Finally Breaks Silence on Manchester United Future.

He has endured ridicule, public humiliation from his own manager, fan condemnation, and a season of near-total anonymity. Now, Manuel Ugarte has finally spoken — and what he has said will send shockwaves straight to the heart of Manchester United’s summer transfer plans.

In a jaw-dropping admission that lays bare the extraordinary personal and professional torment he has suffered at Old Trafford, the Uruguayan midfielder has broken his silence on his future at the club. His message is raw, emotional, and brutally honest. The criticism he has absorbed since arriving in Manchester, he says, would have been enough to destroy lesser men. But Ugarte is still standing — and whether he stays or goes this summer, he is making absolutely clear that it will be on his terms alone.

Two Years in Hell

To appreciate the full weight of Ugarte’s words, one must understand the journey that brought him to this point. Signed on a £50.5 million deal as the long-term Casemiro heir, the Uruguayan has — two seasons on — never shown he could be that. His struggles with the intensity of the Premier League have left him unable to express himself or establish authority at the centre of the park, which has consequently left United on the lookout for better defensive midfielders.

United shelled out £42 million for Ugarte when bringing him in from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2024, pledging a further £8.7 million in add-ons. It was supposed to be the beginning of a new era in the United midfield — a ball-winning destroyer who would do the dirty work and allow those around him to shine. Instead, what followed was a slow, grinding collapse of confidence, form, and reputation.

The statistics tell a merciless story. Throughout his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, Ugarte was granted 22 Premier League starts and a further seven appearances off the bench. But this past season, he had just eight league starts to his name across the entirety of the campaign. He featured as a substitute in 14 matches, while being left on the sidelines for a staggering 15 fixtures.

The criticism from supporters was relentless. But what truly wounded Ugarte most was the treatment he received from within the walls of Old Trafford itself. In one of the most brutal public dressing-downs in recent Premier League memory, Ruben Amorim singled out Ugarte for harsh criticism in front of the entire Manchester United squad following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. According to The Athletic, Amorim told Ugarte that he had “gotten comfortable” and that he did “not recognise him as the same player from their first stint together.” Those comments caused a ripple of reaction among those in the squad.

The humiliation did not stop there. While Ugarte enjoyed some positive moments — including scoring against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals — he continued to face consistent criticism from sections of the fanbase over his performances throughout the season.

The Condition: A New Manager Who Believes in Him

Now, with the transfer window looming and his future the subject of intense debate across Europe, Ugarte has finally spoken out. His message is one of defiance wrapped in vulnerability. He acknowledges the pain. He acknowledges the criticism. But he is not ready to be discarded quietly — and he has set one non-negotiable condition for remaining at Old Trafford: a new manager who believes in him, plays him, and gives him the platform to show what he is truly capable of.

Sources close to the player indicate that Ugarte feels the root of his difficulties at United has not been ability — but trust. Under manager after manager, he found himself marginalised, benched, and publicly questioned. By March 2026, CentreDevils had exclusively reported that Ugarte was not fully satisfied with his situation at Old Trafford. His agent Jorge Mendes had already begun exploring options in Italy, with Napoli showing interest and Juventus also being offered the player in recent discussions.

The Athletic reported in April that Manchester United would make Ugarte available for transfer, and Ugarte himself subsequently confirmed he was open to leaving, telling ESPN: “This year wasn’t the best at Manchester United, but at one point I had a realisation and said: my focus is the World Cup. I did everything for the World Cup — the minutes I played were with the World Cup in mind, the training sessions I did, both the intense ones and the rest sessions.”

Yet even as those words circulated, the deeper message from those in his inner circle was more nuanced. Ugarte is not simply a man who wants out. He is a man who desperately wanted to succeed at one of the world’s biggest clubs — and felt he never truly had the chance.

United’s Dilemma

For Manchester United, the situation is far from straightforward. Despite INEOS wanting to cut losses on the Uruguayan this summer, reports confirm that United “do not want to hawk Ugarte around” and have conceded he “is a hard sell.” He remains tied to Old Trafford until at least June 2029, with his contract containing a further 12-month option.

United have reportedly decided on a radical overhaul of their midfield engine room for the summer of 2026, and Ugarte has entered the list of players who could be sacrificed in a sweeping rebuild. The board is said to be ready to listen to offers in the £35 million to £40 million range — a significant loss on the original investment.

The problem, as has become achingly clear, is that the market is not rushing to their door. Reports indicate that despite INEOS wanting to cut their losses on Ugarte this summer, finding a buyer willing to take on his high wages and contract is proving incredibly difficult.

Juventus, Napoli — and the World Cup Factor

While United wrestle with their options, Europe’s biggest clubs are watching. According to Calciomercato, super-agent Jorge Mendes has already offered Ugarte’s services to Juventus. The report states United are open to a loan deal with a purchase option, though recouping the €45 million paid to PSG will certainly not be straightforward despite Mendes’s skills in the transfer market.

And now the FIFA World Cup 2026 adds an enormous new dimension to this entire saga. Ugarte has managed eight Premier League starts and 22 league appearances in total, with 10 starts across all competitions this season — a campaign where consistent selection proved difficult from start to finish. Yet for Uruguay, he remains a central figure. The global stage of a World Cup on home soil across the United States, Canada, and Mexico gives Ugarte the perfect platform to reset his reputation, silence his critics, and force the football world to look at him anew.

Manchester United is one of the best clubs in the world, Ugarte has said — adding that the World Cup is going to be crucial in determining everything.

For a player who arrived at Old Trafford full of ambition and left each matchday feeling more invisible than the last, those words carry the unmistakable weight of a man who has not yet given up. The criticism that was supposed to end his career has instead hardened his resolve.

Whether Manchester United deserve that resolve in return is now the only question left to answer.
