HERE WE GO. The words every Manchester United supporter has been waiting to hear all summer have finally arrived — and they have arrived with the full, unimpeachable weight of Fabrizio Romano’s personal stamp of approval. Manchester United and Atalanta have reached a full agreement. The deal is done. The contracts are in place. The medical and formal steps are next. And the first signing of the Michael Carrick era has officially been confirmed.

Ederson. Brazilian. Twenty-six years old. One of the most complete, physically dominant, technically gifted box-to-box midfielders in European football. A man who has spent four extraordinary seasons dismantling Serie A in Atalanta’s famous black and blue — and who is now ready to bring that same relentless energy, that same devastating effectiveness, to the Theatre of Dreams.

Old Trafford, the wait is over. Your new midfielder is on his way.

The Deal — Every Confirmed Detail

This is not speculation. This is not a leak. This is Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein — the two most trusted names in global football transfer journalism — both confirming simultaneously that the agreement is complete, the terms are locked, and the signing will be finalised in early July.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed via his official channels: “Deal done with Atalanta for €45m package with add-ons included, agreement now in place. Medical and formal steps to follow but deal in place. Éderson will sign a four-year deal plus option.”

The precise financial breakdown has been confirmed to the last euro. The deal is worth €40.5m in a fixed fee, plus up to a further €4.5m in add-ons — lower than the original Italian reports which had the price closer to €48-50m. The contract with Manchester United will run to June 2030, with an option to extend by another season.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic: “Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign midfielder Ederson, in an early statement of intent ahead of next season. The 26-year-old Brazilian will move to Old Trafford for €40.5 million fixed fee plus €4.5m in potential add-ons. Personal terms are in place on a proposed contract until June 2030, while there is an option to extend by an additional 12 months. Ederson must still undergo a medical and all parties intend to complete the switch in early July.”

Two of the most reliable journalists on the planet. One story. Zero doubt.

How United Stole the Deal From Under Atletico Madrid’s Nose

The story of how Manchester United secured Ederson is one of perfect timing, brilliant negotiation, and clinical execution. For months, the Brazilian had been drifting toward a move to Atletico Madrid — a deal that seemed all but certain and had left United scrambling for alternatives.

While Ederson had agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid last month, they failed to meet the asking price set by Atalanta. Once Manchester United matched those terms and were prepared to pay more for the transfer fee, it became a one-horse race.

Ederson had long been on United’s radar and seemed destined for Atletico Madrid before the Spanish side shifted their focus to Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, opening the door for the Red Devils. The moment that door opened, United moved through it with the kind of speed and conviction that has been absent from their transfer operations for years.

Fabrizio Romano revealed over the weekend that he would be surprised if the midfielder does not seal a switch to Old Trafford — and he has been proven absolutely right within 48 hours.

A Transfer Masterclass — United Get Ederson at a Bargain

One of the most remarkable aspects of this entire deal is the price United have paid. Atalanta bought Ederson from Salernitana in 2022 for €22.9 million. At the peak of his powers, clubs were being quoted €75 million for his services. Yet United have secured him for just €45 million — less than half of that peak valuation — because of a contract situation that gave them enormous negotiating leverage.

He has long been targeted by a host of top clubs but prioritised United — and given he would become a free agent in the summer of 2027, they were able to negotiate a price considerably lower than figures quoted in previous markets.

Atalanta’s Éderson was previously valued at as much as €75 million but could be sold in 2026 for less than half that amount — representing an extraordinary opportunity for Manchester United to acquire a world-class midfielder at a price that defies his true market value.

This is another transfer masterclass from Atalanta, who bought the Brazilian from Salernitana for €22.9m in the summer of 2022 — and United have been the beneficiaries of their ability to identify and develop elite talent.

The Player — Why Carrick Fought So Hard for This Signing

Michael Carrick has spent twelve months watching Manchester United’s midfield creak and groan under the weight of mismatched personnel and declining legs. He identified the solution long before he was given the permanent job. And the solution had a name: Ederson.

The 26-year-old has made 180 appearances for Atalanta since joining from Salernitana in 2022 and helped them to Europa League glory in 2024. He has scored 16 goals and provided five assists across his time with the Italian club — an extraordinary return for a midfielder that underlines his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.

Known for his exceptional work rate and physicality, the Brazilian is seen as an ideal fit for the demands of Premier League football. His ability to carry the ball forward, make progressive passes, and dictate play as an anchorman could allow Kobbie Mainoo to push further up the pitch in United’s midfield — unlocking an entirely new dimension to Carrick’s tactical setup.

Known for his energy, ball-winning ability, and box-to-box presence, Ederson is expected to add athleticism and balance to Manchester United’s midfield. His arrival is seen as an important step in the club’s long-term midfield plans — filling the void left by compatriot Casemiro, whose four-season spell at Old Trafford came to an end last month.

The Casemiro comparison is inevitable but instructive. Casemiro arrived as a destroyer — physical, combative, dominant in the air. But age eroded his legs and his ability to recover from mistakes. Ederson offers everything Casemiro had in his prime — and adds a dimension of progressive ball-carrying and technical sophistication that the Brazilian veteran never possessed.

What Comes Next — A Summer Just Getting Started

Crucially, those inside Old Trafford are making absolutely clear that Ederson is not the end of United’s midfield ambitions this summer. He is the beginning.

The club are expected to pursue at least one more midfielder, with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes among those being monitored. According to earlier reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are planning to sign multiple midfielders this summer as part of their squad overhaul — Ederson is expected to be the first of several additions.

The vision is becoming crystal clear. Ederson anchoring the midfield with physical dominance and progressive quality. Mateus Fernandes bringing box-to-box energy and technical brilliance alongside him. Kobbie Mainoo operating with the freedom to express himself in the spaces ahead. And Sandro Tonali — whose deal with Newcastle is also edging toward completion — adding the elite European pedigree that Champions League nights at Old Trafford will demand.

Ederson will officially complete his move to United in July and could make his first unofficial appearance for the Red Devils when they play their first pre-season game against Wrexham on July 18.

A Statement of Intent — The Carrick Era Has Begun

This signing matters beyond the individual. It matters because of what it represents. Michael Carrick, in his first summer as permanent Manchester United manager, has gone into the market and secured a player that Atletico Madrid wanted, that Juventus tracked, that Inter Milan coveted — and he has done it quickly, cleanly, and at a price that makes the football world blink twice when they see the number.

This is not the Manchester United of panic buys and inflated fees. This is not the club that paid £89 million for a player and watched him destroy their season. This is a new Manchester United — structured, decisive, and guided by a manager who knows exactly what he wants and exactly how to get it.

The HERE WE GO has landed. The first signing is confirmed. The Carrick revolution has its first soldier.

And Old Trafford? Old Trafford is just getting started.

Welcome to Manchester United, Ederson. 🇧🇷🔴
