BERBATOV GOES PUBLIC: “LOAN HIM OUT IMMEDIATELY — ZERO DRIVE, WEAK MENTALITY, A COMPLETE DISASTER AGAINST ATLÉTICO!”

The preseason tour has just delivered Manchester United’s first significant test of the summer — and for one particular player, the result of that test could not have been more damning.

A 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid. A performance that raised questions. And a former United striker who loved the club with everything he had — watching from afar, absorbing what he saw, and concluding that someone in that red shirt right now has absolutely no business being there.

Dimitar Berbatov has delivered his verdict. And it is brutal.

“HIS MENTALITY IS TOO WEAK FOR THIS CLUB — ZERO DRIVE”

Berbatov is not a man who rushes to judgment. The silky Bulgarian forward who graced Old Trafford with some of the most technically exquisite football the Premier League has ever witnessed is known for thoughtful, measured assessments. He understands the pressures of performing at Manchester United. He knows how it feels to be scrutinised at the highest level.

Which makes what he has just said all the more significant:

“Regardless of how Manchester United performed against Atlético Madrid, I’m not happy with the way he plays. I think he should be sent out on loan. His mentality is too weak for this club — he has zero drive and every one of his touches today was a disaster.”

Zero drive. Every touch a disaster. Mentality too weak for Manchester United.

From a man who understood Old Trafford’s demands from the inside — who delivered the kind of performances that earned the respect of Sir Alex Ferguson and United supporters worldwide — those are not throwaway criticisms. They are a precise, considered verdict on a player whose fundamental approach to the game does not meet the standard that wearing red requires.

THE ATLÉTICO TEST THAT EXPOSED EVERYTHING

Atlético Madrid are not preseason opponents chosen for comfort. Under Diego Simeone, they represent one of the most physically and mentally demanding tests any team can face — relentless pressing, aggressive defending, and an intensity of effort that leaves nowhere to hide for players who do not bring their absolute maximum.

In that environment — against an opponent specifically designed to expose weakness of character and quality — this player apparently produced something close to his worst possible version. Touch after touch that did not come off. A physical and mental presence on the pitch that failed to impose itself. A body language and effort level that communicated, loudly and visibly, the zero drive that Berbatov has now named publicly.

You cannot hide in a game against Atlético. Simeone’s teams find the weak link in any opposition and attack it relentlessly. And this player, if Berbatov’s assessment is accurate, spent 90 minutes being exactly that weak link.

For a squad being assembled for a genuine Premier League title challenge and a deep European run — that is simply not acceptable. Not against top-level opposition. Not in a preseason match designed precisely to answer questions about readiness and quality.

This player gave Berbatov the wrong answers to every question.

WHY LOAN — NOT SALE?

The specific nature of Berbatov’s recommendation is worth examining. He is not calling for a permanent exit in the way that Carrick called for Zirkzee’s departure after Wrexham or Drogba demanded an immediate sale for the Chelsea flop. He is calling for a loan.

And that distinction matters.

A loan says: the talent might be there, but the environment is wrong right now. It says: this player needs game time, confidence, and the experience of performing consistently at a level where the microscope is less intense — so that when he returns, if he returns, he is ready for what Old Trafford demands.

It is a more forgiving verdict than a permanent exit. But it is not a comfortable one. Because a loan at this stage of a summer filled with extraordinary arrivals and elite standards being set every day — is effectively a demotion. A public acknowledgement that the player is not ready to compete for the shirt alongside Valverde, Leão, Alvarez, and the rest of the extraordinary signings that have transformed this squad.

Berbatov is giving him a chance to save his career at United. But he is making very clear that the chance cannot be taken here — not yet. Not like this.

THE PATTERN CONTINUES AT OLD TRAFFORD

The preseason has produced a fascinating dual narrative at Manchester United. On one side — the extraordinary summer of signings, the Lacey emergence, the Zirkzee redemption arc, Tyler leading the youngsters. Signs of a squad taking shape with real purpose and real belief.

On the other — players who cannot meet the standard. Carrick’s public axing. Evra’s repeated fury. And now Berbatov — the most understated and elegant of all United’s recent legends — concluding that one player’s mentality is simply too weak for what this club is building.

The clearout that Ratcliffe initiated at the start of the summer — seven players listed for sale, funds released for reinforcements — appears to have further names to consider.

Berbatov has just added one to the conversation.

LOAN HIM. NOW. BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS.

The window is open. The summer is not over. And the opportunity to resolve this situation cleanly — sending the player to an environment where he can rebuild his confidence and his game, rather than watching him struggle in a United shirt when competitive football begins — is still available.

Carrick has shown all summer that he will act when the evidence demands it. Berbatov has provided the evidence clearly, publicly, and without hesitation.

Zero drive. Weak mentality. A disaster against Atlético.

Loan him out. Immediately. Before the Premier League season begins and the cost of carrying a passenger at this level becomes measured in dropped points rather than preseason results.

Berbatov has spoken. And at Manchester United, when legends speak with that level of conviction  the smart move is to listen.
