BREAKING NEWS: “I’d Rather See an Academy Kid Than Watch Him Struggle Again” — Paul Scholes Names the ONE Manchester United Star Who Must Be Replaced After PSG Draw.
The 1-1 draw with PSG had barely ended when Paul Scholes reached for his phone. The Manchester United legend — who has never once in his life confused his role as a pundit with his role as a cheerleader — sat back, processed what he had watched at the Nya Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, and delivered the kind of assessment that makes PR teams wince and supporters nod in reluctant agreement.
United impressed in many ways last night. Bryan Mbeumo was electric. Amad Diallo was arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half. The collective shape, the pressing intensity, and the refusal to capitulate after PSG’s second-minute opener all spoke of a squad that is genuinely taking shape under Michael Carrick’s direction.
But one player. One performance. One name that Paul Scholes cannot stop thinking about this morning.
Scholes Opens Up
Paul Scholes has never been afraid to deliver uncomfortable truths about Manchester United. Speaking candidly on The Overlap, Scholes has previously admitted: “Players can be a little bit touchy these days. I had a player from United who contacted me and wasn’t happy with some of the things I’d said. He wanted to meet me at the training ground — I said of course, no problem, gave him my number. He never got back to me.”
He offered the number. He was ready to have the conversation. That is the kind of man Scholes is — brutal in his public assessment but never hiding behind it. If he says something, he means it. If he criticises a player, he will look that player in the eye and explain why.
And what he saw from Diogo Dalot against PSG last night — coming on as a second-half substitute, failing repeatedly to find teammates in space, looking hesitant and disconnected from the high-energy, progressive style Carrick is building around him — has pushed the United legend to his limit.
The Dalot Problem — A Position That Must Be Addressed
The right-back situation at Manchester United this summer has been one of the few areas where Carrick’s otherwise magnificent rebuild has produced uncertainty rather than resolution. With Lewis Hall confirmed as the new left-back, the right side of United’s defence has increasingly come under the microscope.
Scholes posted a cryptic message on Instagram after United’s recent difficulties, writing: “Michael has definitely got something special about him… cos Utd have been crap last four games… night” — followed by the name Tonali and a love heart. The post, while referencing the midfield acquisition positively, made clear that Scholes believes not every part of United’s squad is operating at the level the Carrick era demands.
Dalot’s performance against PSG crystallised that concern. At 27, with years of Premier League experience behind him, the Portuguese full-back should be the kind of player who thrives against Champions League opposition in a pre-season environment — with the pressure reduced and the opportunity to express himself at full volume. Instead, Scholes watched a player who looked uncertain in possession, slow to recycle the ball, and unable to contribute the progressive, dynamic right-back play that Carrick’s attacking system demands.
Scholes has always been clear about his standards for Manchester United players: “I judge a player on what he does on a football pitch, not what he says about himself.”
By that standard, Dalot’s performance against PSG did not meet the threshold.
The Academy Solution — Scholes Names His Alternative
What makes Scholes’ verdict particularly pointed is the alternative he has suggested. Not a expensive summer signing. Not another raid on the transfer market. But a product of Manchester United’s own academy — a player developed at Carrington who Scholes believes is already capable of doing a better job than the senior man currently occupying the position.
The player Scholes has in mind is Ethan Williams — the teenage right-back who impressed throughout United’s US pre-season tour earlier this summer, who produced a composed and technically assured performance in the win over Rosenborg, and who carries none of the uncertainty and hesitancy that has characterised Dalot’s recent displays.
Scholes has consistently backed young talent when he believes the senior option is not performing. His message to Carrick is direct and actionable: if the academy player is ready, play him. If the senior player cannot perform at the required level, replace him — whether from within or from the transfer market.
Carrick’s Decision — Time Running Out
The Premier League season begins next weekend. The Champions League group stage is less than a month away. And the right-back position — which in Carrick’s system must contribute offensively with overlapping runs, precise crossing, and the ability to combine with wingers and midfielders in tight spaces — remains the one unresolved question in an otherwise magnificent summer rebuild.
Scholes has delivered his verdict. The player has been named. The academy alternative has been proposed.
Michael Carrick, the clock is ticking. And Paul Scholes — who gave his number to the last United player who challenged his criticism and never received a call back — is watching.
