DRESSING ROOM CHAOS: ŠEŠKO DROPS BOMBSHELL — “SIGN IGOR THIAGO AND I’M GONE. THAT DAY WILL BE MY LAST AT THIS CLUB!”
Benjamin Šeško has just thrown Manchester United’s summer into unexpected chaos — and his confession is so raw, so honest, and so explosively self-aware that it has stopped the football world in its tracks.
Not an agent briefing. Not a carefully worded statement through official channels. A first-team star looking at the direction of his club’s transfer activity and making the most personal, most vulnerable, and most potentially career-defining admission any footballer can make.
He knows how good Igor Thiago is. He knows what his arrival would mean. And he is not prepared to wait around and find out if he is right.
“THAT DAY WILL BE MY LAST DAY AT THIS CLUB”
Šeško did not attempt to dress this up as a professional transfer request or a disagreement about playing time. He came out and said it with a frightening directness:
“If Manchester United sign him — Igor Thiago — or even enter talks or negotiations to sign him, that day will be my last day at this club because I know how good he is. The moment he arrives, I’ll be sent to the bench and I can’t take that risk. As little as negotiations to bring him begin, I’ll leave.”
As little as negotiations begin. Not when the deal is done. Not when Thiago arrives and takes his shirt number. Not even when personal terms are agreed.
The moment Manchester United open talks — Šeško is walking.
The ultimatum is so extreme, so preemptive, and so completely rooted in Šeško’s own honest assessment of his position that it almost demands a level of respect before it demands a response. This is a player who knows himself. Who knows his rival. And who has decided, with absolute clarity, that he will not wait to be displaced.
THE SELF-AWARENESS THAT MAKES THIS EXTRAORDINARY
There is a particular kind of honesty in Šeško’s statement that sets it apart from every other dressing room drama this summer has produced. He is not angry at the club. He is not accusing Carrick of betrayal or demanding assurances about his role.
He is simply saying: I know how good Igor Thiago is. And I know what it means if he comes here.
That self-awareness — the ability to assess a rival’s quality clearly, to project what his arrival would do to the squad hierarchy, and to make a pre-emptive decision rather than waiting for the situation to unfold — is actually the mark of a footballer who understands the game at a very high level.
He is not afraid of competition in the abstract. He is afraid of losing to this specific competition. And rather than pretending otherwise, he has said so out loud.
THE CARRICK DILEMMA
Michael Carrick has spent this entire summer making ruthless decisions. Axing Zirkzee after Wrexham. U-turning on the striker position after watching Kauã Elias. Demanding players meet his standards or leave. Building a culture where merit and honesty define everything.
And now one of his own first-team strikers has been more honest than perhaps any player has been with him all summer. Šeško has told him directly — pursue Thiago and lose me.
That is a genuine dilemma. Not in the sense that the decision is unclear — Carrick has shown all summer that he will not allow a player’s ultimatum to override his recruitment judgement. But in the sense that losing Šeško — a striker of genuine Premier League quality and significant long-term potential — is not a consequence that can be waved away casually.
The Kauã Elias pursuit is already active. The Thiago contact has been made. Carrick said Zirkzee could leave but Šeško was part of his plan. Now that plan has a fault line running through its middle.
THE “SIGN HIM AND I’M GONE” PATTERN — REVERSED
Throughout this extraordinary summer, the transfer market has been defined by players saying they will leave their clubs for Manchester United. Ultimatums delivered to managers, presidents, and teammates about the destination that must be reached or everything will be sacrificed.
Šeško has flipped that narrative completely. He is inside United. He is happy at United. He wants to stay at United.
But not at any cost. Not if the club’s recruitment activity makes his continued presence untenable. Not if the arrival of a striker he privately rates so highly that he already knows the bench awaits him is allowed to happen on his watch.
For the first time this summer — a United player is issuing an ultimatum to his own club. The direction of travel has reversed. And the shock of it is almost as significant as the content.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
Three paths exist. United abandon the Thiago pursuit to keep Šeško — unlikely given Carrick’s character and the early contacts already made. United pursue Thiago and accept that Šeško will follow through on his ultimatum — a significant but manageable loss given the squad depth assembled this summer. Or United find a way to convince Šeško that his role is secure even with Thiago’s arrival — the most complex path but the one that preserves the most value for the club.
Carrick has never been intimidated by ultimatums this summer. He delivered one himself over a midfielder. He has watched rival club after rival club cave under the weight of player power — and has consistently refused to follow suit when the pressure has been applied to him.
The Šeško situation is different only because the ultimatum is coming from within. But the principle is the same.
United’s recruitment needs come first. The right signings will be made. And the players who choose to stay will be the ones who understand that being part of something historic sometimes means accepting a challenge rather than running from one.
Šeško has declared his position. Carrick will declare his.
And Old Trafford’s most unexpected dressing room drama of the summer is only just beginning.
