Despite the heartbreak caused by Diogo Jota’s tragic accident, Liverpool FC has brought a glimmer of hope to his grieving family — especially his wife and the three beautiful kids he left behind
In the wake of the tragic car crash that took the lives of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva on July 3, 2025, Liverpool Football Club has extended meaningful support to Jota’s mourning family, especially his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children.
The 28-year-old Portuguese attacker and his 26-year-old sibling, a midfielder for Penafiel, died in a fiery collision on Spain’s A-52 motorway close to Cernadilla, Zamora, plunging the football community into grief. Amid this sorrow, Liverpool’s compassionate outreach to Jota’s loved ones has made a powerful impact, offering both emotional comfort and practical help during this devastating time.
That same day, July 3, 2025, the club released a statement expressing their sorrow: “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, André. We request privacy for their family, friends, teammates, and staff as they process this loss. We will provide our full support.”
A dedicated support unit has been arranged by Liverpool to assist Rute and the children, all of whom are under six years old. This includes access to counseling, financial assistance, and help with day-to-day matters—support made even more significant given the tragedy occurred less than two weeks after Jota and Rute were married on June 22.
In collaboration with the Portuguese Football Federation, the club is exploring the idea of launching a youth football initiative in Portugal in memory of Jota and André, aiming to preserve their legacy.
Supporters have transformed Anfield with tributes—scarves, flowers, and notes referencing the chant, “And his name is Diogo.” Even Everton fans have come together in a rare show of unity to honor Jota.
Social media has reflected the public’s emotions, with one fan writing, “The club stepping up for Rute and the kids shows what YNWA truly means.” Jürgen Klopp shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, tearfully calling Jota “family,” and vowing to personally support the family.
Though the cause of the accident was initially believed to be a tire failure, authorities are now investigating potential foul play after a suspicious material resembling an explosive was discovered, according to Arne Slot.
As Liverpool prepare to play Bournemouth on August 17 without Jota—whose 65 goals in 182 matches were key to the team’s 2024/25 league victory—the club’s unwavering support for his family brings comfort.
With tributes pouring in from figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and the Prime Minister of Portugal, Liverpool’s response ensures that Jota’s influence and memory will carry on, offering strength and hope to his grieving wife and children.
