Lee Dixon Criticizes Arsenal’s star After Anthony Gordon Scores for Newcastle
Lee Dixon criticized Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber after Anthony Gordon’s goal helped Newcastle increase their lead to 2-0 in a Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal. Dixon pointed out Timber’s delayed response to the rebound after Gordon pounced on a missed save by Arsenal’s goalkeeper, David Raya.
Newcastle initially took the lead in the first half, with Alexander Isak scoring in the 37th minute, marking his 14th goal of the season. Early in the second half, Raya saved Isak’s attempt, but Gordon reacted swiftly to convert the rebound, leaving Timber behind.
Dixon, speaking on ITV, remarked: “Timber was too slow to respond to the rebound. A full-back should track that, and Gordon did, putting them 2-0 up. Arsenal now faces an uphill battle.”
He further emphasized that following the rebound should be a fundamental task for a player of Timber’s skill: “For a full-back, it’s basic to follow the ball in that situation,” Dixon noted.
Despite the setback, Gordon remained focused on the second leg, telling ITV, “It’s not time to celebrate yet. There’s still another 90 minutes to play.” He also praised Isak, calling him one of the top strikers in Europe right now.
Newcastle’s victory marked their seventh consecutive win, with Gordon commending the team’s effort, particularly defender Dan Burn, who he named his player of the season.
Arsenal’s struggles persist, as this loss followed a 1-1 draw with Brighton in the Premier League. They will look to recover in their upcoming FA Cup match against Manchester United.
