Virgil van Dijk has been labeled “salty” following a remark he made about Everton after his Liverpool team conceded a last-minute equalizer in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Liverpool seemed to be on their way to a win when Mo Salah put them ahead 2-1 in the 73rd minute with his 22nd Premier League goal, as Everton appeared to be running out of ideas.

But in the final moments of the game, Everton captain James Tarkowski scored a brilliant volley past Alisson Becker, sending Goodison Park into raptures.

A lengthy VAR review followed to check for a possible offside and a potential foul by Beto on Ibrahima Konate, but ultimately, the goal stood, and Everton salvaged a point at the death.

Tempers flared after the final whistle when Abdoulaye Doucoure provoked Liverpool’s traveling fans, with Curtis Jones confronting and shoving the former Watford midfielder.

A confrontation between both teams ensued, resulting in red cards for Doucoure and Jones, as well as for Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff due to their conduct.

Slot was prohibited from speaking to TNT Sports due to his dismissal, but captain Virgil van Dijk went ahead with an interview.

The Dutch defender claimed that referee Michael Oliver lost control of the game and repeatedly complained about the goal being scored “after time.”

Van Dijk discussed the incident involving Doucoure and Jones, and he couldn’t resist making a jab at Everton, referring to the match as their “cup final.”

“This is their cup final and they will do everything they can to make it difficult for us. It’s a big win for them but a setback for us,” Van Dijk said regarding Everton’s tactics and celebrations.

Reacting to the interview, one fan on X commented: “Terrible post-match interview by Van Dijk. Comes off as petulant and a poor sport. Should show grace in defeat, victory, or even a draw!”

A second wrote: “Loooooollll Van Dijk is so salty. ‘This is their cup final.’ He’s not wrong, to be fair, but man.”

A third added: “Crikey, some serious salt from Van Dijk in that interview.”

A fourth user remarked: “This post-match interview from Van Dijk is embarrassing. He’s never graceful.”

After two winless games, Liverpool will aim to recover when they face Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.
