Jurgen Klopp reveals ‘Liverpool’s biggest problem’ under Arne Slot: What is the solution?
Jurgen Klopp has discussed “Liverpool’s biggest problem” under new manager Arne Slot, emphasizing an ongoing issue that has plagued the team since Klopp’s arrival at Anfield.
The left-back position has once again become a weak spot for Liverpool, as seen in their recent 2-2 draw against Fulham. Klopp reflected on his own experience, noting that Slot is facing a similar issue that he encountered when he first joined the club.
“Left-back was a major problem when I arrived. We tried various solutions, like James Milner and Joe Gomez, but it was only resolved when we signed Andy Robertson. That position needed a natural player, someone consistent and reliable,” Klopp explained.
Robertson, who became key to Liverpool’s success after his £8m transfer, is now part of the concern. At 30 years old, the Scottish full-back has started to show signs of decline, with noticeable lapses in his physicality and defensive play.
Fulham exploited these weaknesses by targeting Robertson with inverted runs and quick passes, which ultimately led to his early substitution after just 17 minutes.
With Kostas Tsimikas injured and Robertson suspended for Liverpool’s upcoming Carabao Cup match against Southampton, the team will be without a recognized left-back. Klopp emphasized the need for new signings to address this issue.
“Arne Slot and Liverpool need to look to the market for a long-term solution. I always believed in smart signings – Robertson was a bargain and allowed us to strengthen other areas. A similar approach is necessary now,” Klopp added.
The former Liverpool manager also pointed out the importance of the club’s recruitment team, led by Richard Hughes, in identifying a dependable and cost-effective player to improve the left side of the defense.
Arne Slot will be hoping to address this urgent problem in the January transfer window as Liverpool aims to challenge for the Premier League title and fend off competition from rivals like Chelsea. Whether Slot can replicate Klopp’s success in resolving the issue remains to be seen.
