‘A Liability?’ – Pundit Questions if Liverpool Star is Now the Team’s Weak Link”
“Pundit Suggests Liverpool Star Could Be Their Weakest Link”
A Liverpool player has been identified as a potential “weakness” in Arne Slot’s starting lineup following a poor performance against Fulham on Saturday, where his actions were seen as having “cost his team.”
Andy Robertson faced a challenging start at Anfield, being taken out by Issa Diop, losing a duel to Andreas Pereira for Fulham’s first goal, and receiving a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity—all within the opening 17 minutes.
The Scotland captain, who has been under growing scrutiny for his recent performances, is now facing questions from pundits, with one suggesting that the 30-year-old could be developing into a weak link in Liverpool’s lineup.
Mustoe Critiques Robertson’s Form
On NBC Sports’ The 2 Robbies podcast, former Middlesbrough midfielder Robbie Mustoe analyzed Liverpool’s display and specifically pointed out Robertson.
“Robertson, again… is weakness too strong a word? A weakness at left-back? There have been a couple of challenges and mistakes,” Mustoe remarked. “He’s been a brilliant player, but I wonder if he’s lost a step and is starting to make errors. Maybe it’s just a rough patch, but it’s probably cost his team a couple of points.”
A Setback, But Robertson Remains Essential
Despite Robertson’s difficulties against Fulham, and a decline in his attacking contributions—recording just one assist in 21 games—some of the criticism aimed at him seems unwarranted. Just a week ago, Robertson was named UEFA’s Player of the Match in Liverpool’s Champions League win over Girona, demonstrating that he can still perform when required.
At 30, Robertson may no longer have the same boundless energy he once did, but it’s too soon to declare his decline permanent. With Kostas Tsimikas still sidelined, Slot now faces a selection challenge for the upcoming matches. Potential options include shifting the adaptable Joe Gomez to left-back or giving young James Norris an opportunity, as Klopp did earlier this year with Conor Bradley on the other side.
While Robertson’s season has been inconsistent, he remains a key player for Liverpool and is likely to have a significant role in the months to come.
