Manchester United, once a dominant force in English football, has encountered substantial challenges in recent years. While the club has a squad brimming with talent, it has struggled to recapture the success it enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson, frequently falling short in the Premier League race. Inconsistencies and instability in managerial roles have hindered their progress.

Former manager José Mourinho, who led the club to Europa League and Carabao Cup victories in 2017, has been a vocal critic of United’s struggles. He has repeatedly pointed out the club’s failure to adapt to modern football and highlighted various structural and strategic issues that have hindered their return to the top.

Mourinho’s observations have proven correct, particularly regarding the club’s financial situation. Between 2021 and 2024, Manchester United faced significant losses exceeding £300 million. This financial decline, coupled with poor recruitment strategies and underperformance, has made it difficult for the club to keep up with its Premier League competitors. Despite considerable investments in marquee players, United has failed to build a cohesive squad with a clear long-term vision.

Tactically, the current manager, Ruben Amorim, has experimented with a 3-4-3 formation, but it has not delivered the desired results. Although players like Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Casemiro show individual brilliance, the team has struggled to adapt to the system, with a lack of natural wing-backs and midfielders who can control games effectively.

Defensively, United continues to struggle despite investing in players like Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane. Injuries and inconsistent performances have disrupted their backline, and the reliance on aging players like Jonny Evans and out-of-form Harry Maguire has only compounded the issues.

Injuries have been a persistent problem this season, with only a few players remaining fit. This has forced Amorim to rotate his squad constantly, which has disrupted any rhythm the team could develop, further hurting their consistency. Although the club has started using predictive analytics to prevent injuries, these reactive measures fail to address the root causes.

Off the pitch, Manchester United’s management turmoil has caused widespread frustration among fans and former players. Gary Neville, a club legend, has been vocal in his criticism, describing the club’s decision-making as a “disaster.” The lack of direction and continuous managerial changes have contributed to the ongoing struggles at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has consistently emphasized the need for structural changes, warning that without evolving, United’s decline will continue. His words resonate as the club lags behind its rivals, both tactically and in terms of squad development. United’s inability to transition into a modern, high-pressing team has left them predictable and vulnerable in key matches.

One of the most significant issues United faces is their inability to dominate midfield battles. Unlike their rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, who boast well-balanced and dynamic midfielders, United often finds themselves overrun in the center of the pitch. Casemiro’s decline, combined with inconsistent performances from Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat, has highlighted the need for a high-energy, ball-winning midfielder.

Additionally, the forward line has been a concern. Although Rasmus Højlund shows promise, his lack of experience and inconsistency have cast doubts on his ability to lead the attack for a title-challenging team. Marcus Rashford, following his excellent 2022/23 season, has failed to replicate that form, and Jadon Sancho’s future at the club remains uncertain.

United’s overreliance on individual moments of brilliance, rather than a well-defined system, has also led to underwhelming performances, particularly against organized teams. The lack of a coherent attacking philosophy has stunted player development and hindered the team’s ability to control matches.

For United to return to the top, they must undergo a fundamental transformation. The club needs to establish a clear footballing philosophy, similar to those at Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool. Appointing a long-term manager with a solid tactical vision and supporting them with strategic recruitment will be vital for rebuilding the club’s future.

The Glazers’ ownership has also been under scrutiny, with fans protesting against their management of the club. The lack of investment in Old Trafford’s facilities and questionable financial decisions have contributed to growing discontent among supporters. The potential sale of the club or a change in ownership could have a significant impact on the club’s long-term trajectory.

Despite their current struggles, Manchester United remains one of the most prominent football clubs globally. However, history alone will not guarantee success. The club must embrace change, modernize its approach, and address its critical weaknesses to end its Premier League title drought.

Mourinho’s assessment of United’s issues is still relevant today. If Manchester United can identify and address their key problems—from tactical issues to poor squad planning—they can return to the top. But without decisive action, their struggles could persist for years.
