Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, condemned Nunez’s conduct, describing it as “reckless” and “daft,” implying that a red card could have been justified.
This was the second consecutive game in which Liverpool faced a potential red card review by VAR, following Ibrahima Konate’s challenge in the midweek fixture against Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool’s first-half display against Southampton showed no improvement, and their halftime deficit accurately reflected their performance.
Nunez’s reaction, driven by frustration, was unnecessary and could have resulted in serious repercussions for Liverpool. To overturn the game, the team required discipline and concentration rather than moments of immaturity. It was crucial for Nunez to harness his emotions effectively, focusing on making a positive impact on the pitch instead of engaging in unsportsmanlike behavior.
