During a recent press conference, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso discussed the future of his star midfielder, Florian Wirtz, amid increasing speculation about a summer transfer to Real Madrid. Alonso, a former Real Madrid player himself, acknowledged the widespread interest in Wirtz while highlighting his own role in potentially facilitating the move to the Spanish giants.

Alonso’s Statement on Wirtz

Speaking to the media, Alonso remarked, “I’m only allowing him to join Madrid because I’m the club legend; if not, other clubs are interested in signing him.” This frank statement reflects Alonso’s recognition of Wirtz’s remarkable talent and the strong interest he has generated from elite European clubs.

Wirtz’s Rising Profile

At just 21, Florian Wirtz has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout players. His performances have not only cemented his place at Bayer Leverkusen but also secured him a role in the German national team. Known for his technical skill, vision, and versatility, Wirtz is a sought-after prospect for top clubs.

Real Madrid’s Interest

Reports suggest that Real Madrid sees Wirtz as a possible successor to veteran midfielder Luka Modric. The Spanish club is reportedly eager to bring him in to strengthen their midfield for the coming seasons. However, any potential deal would require negotiating Wirtz’s existing contract with Leverkusen, which runs until 2027, and meeting the club’s valuation.

Alonso’s Role

Xabi Alonso’s deep connection with Real Madrid gives him a unique position in discussions about Wirtz’s future. His ties to the Spanish club could play a key role in negotiations, ensuring that both Wirtz’s career progression and Bayer Leverkusen’s interests are taken into account.

Looking Ahead

While speculation about Wirtz’s future continues, Alonso’s recent comments shed light on the complexities involved. As the summer transfer window nears, all eyes will be on whether Wirtz secures a high-profile move to Real Madrid, influenced by the legacy and connections of his current manager.
