If Xabi Alonso is to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid when the season ends, he has already earmarked three players for potential summer moves.
David Ornstein of *The Athletic* has revealed that Ancelotti will exit Madrid at the end of the current campaign, following an underwhelming season in all competitions.
After being eliminated from the Champions League by Arsenal and losing the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona, Ancelotti’s only chance of claiming a trophy lies in this summer’s Club World Cup or retaining the La Liga crown.
Yet with Barcelona holding a four-point lead at the summit of the league, even that seems unlikely, leaving a trophyless season on the cards unless Madrid triumphs in the U.S.
With Ancelotti’s exit virtually settled, focus has shifted toward who might inherit the role at the Bernabeu, and Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso appears to be the leading contender.
The former Madrid midfielder, poised to make a return to his old club, is said to have already drawn up a wishlist of three players he’d like to bring with him to Spain’s capital.
*Diario AS* reports that Alonso is keen on signing Martín Zubimendi, Florian Wirtz, and Jonathan Tah should he make the switch to Madrid.
Although Zubimendi has been strongly linked with Arsenal, the Gunners have yet to trigger his £50 million release clause.
Wirtz, who currently plays under Alonso at Leverkusen, also appears to be on the move, with Bayern Munich reportedly leading the chase for his signature.

Responding to speculation about his future, Alonso addressed the links to Madrid and emphasized his commitment to his current club.
*”It’s not a good time to discuss the future,”* said Alonso, whose team is currently six points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
*”We’re at a very important moment in the season.”*
*”I don’t want to talk about speculation and rumours,”* he added. *”[I understand] that this is happening, but what’s more important to me is what’s happening right now.”*

Xabi Alonso has commented on his future as speculation around his potential move to Real Madrid intensifies, with Jurgen Klopp’s agent also weighing in.
Alonso, 43, and Klopp, 57, are among the names being considered as potential successors to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
Following a 2-1 defeat (5-1 on aggregate) to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, pressure has mounted on 65-year-old Ancelotti.
On Thursday (August 17), *Sky Sports* reported that the Italian manager is “expected to leave the club” after the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in Seville on April 26 – although Real Madrid has not confirmed this.
While several candidates have been linked, Klopp’s representative Marc Kosicke seems to have ruled him out.
Florian Plettenberg of *Sky Germany* posted an update on X on Friday afternoon (April 18), declaring Alonso as the top contender for the Bernabeu role.
*”[There are] new rumours linking Jürgen Klopp with Real Madrid and Brazil,”* wrote Plettenberg.
*”His top agent, Marc Kosicke, told us for Sky: ‘Jürgen is very happy with his new role as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull’.”*
Shortly before that, Alonso addressed his future during a press conference ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash against St Pauli.

The Spaniard, who clinched both league and cup titles in his debut full season as a senior coach, was quizzed about what lies ahead.
*”It’s not a good time to discuss the future,”* said Alonso, whose side trail Bayern Munich by six points.
*”We’re at a very important moment in the season.”*
*”I don’t want to talk about speculation and rumours,”* he added. *”[I understand] that this is happening, but what’s more important to me is what’s happening right now.”*
This isn’t the first time Alonso has been linked with a departure from the Bundesliga champions. In summer 2024, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern – all clubs where Alonso once played – were reportedly interested. However, Liverpool opted for Arne Slot, Bayern chose Vincent Kompany, and Ancelotti stayed on after winning both La Liga and the Champions League.
