Chelsea are close to completing a £50 million transfer for Borussia Dortmund’s thrilling winger Jamie Gittens, as negotiations have progressed quickly following Dortmund’s refusal of an initial £42 million offer.

The 20-year-old England U21 international, who has consented to a seven-year deal with the Blues, is expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge soon after the FIFA Club World Cup, where both teams are currently competing.

The agreement, anticipated to be concluded after the tournament, marks a major achievement for Enzo Maresca’s squad, surpassing competition from Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

Gittens, who netted 12 goals and supplied five assists in 48 games for Dortmund last season, including four goals in the Champions League, adds energy to Chelsea’s left wing.

His 92 dribbles and speed make him an ideal candidate for Maresca’s expansive attacking style, demonstrated in Chelsea’s 3-0 Club World Cup victory over Esperance Tunis.

Dortmund’s previous refusals of £29.5 million and £42 million proposals reflected their valuation of £50-60 million, but discussions in the U.S. during the tournament have secured a £50 million transfer fee, including bonuses, pleasing both sides.

The transfer fills Chelsea’s requirement for a right-footed winger, especially with Mykhailo Mudryk suspended due to doping and Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United unlikely to be made permanent.

Gittens, who briefly trained at Chelsea’s academy before moving to Manchester City’s youth ranks, is motivated by the wish to return and excel under Maresca, aiming for England’s 2026 World Cup squad. Nevertheless, FIFA regulations bar him from featuring in Chelsea’s Club World Cup matches, since he appeared in Dortmund’s goalless draw with Fluminense.

Chelsea supporters are excited, with one fan commenting, “Gittens for £50m? Maresca’s cooking something special!” Others praise the club’s determination after several rejected bids, although some Dortmund followers doubt Gittens’ diminished role under Niko Kovac’s 3-5-2 setup.

The signing, part of Chelsea’s hectic summer including Liam Delap’s £30 million signing and ongoing talks for Victor Osimhen (£84.5m), highlights their ambition. With Enzo Fernandez out due to a head injury and Nicolas Jackson suspended for tonight’s Benfica match, Gittens’ forthcoming arrival strengthens Chelsea’s attacking options, though the Blues must wait until post-tournament to officially introduce their new talent for the 2025/26 Prem

ier League campaign.
