Arsenal is said to be nearing completion of an agreement for Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyökeres, moving ahead of competing Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester United. The Swedish striker, with a buyout clause of £84 million, scored 50 goals across all tournaments last year and has become one of the most in-demand forwards in Europe.
The North London team has reportedly offered a five-year deal to Gyökeres, with a weekly salary near £135,000 — adding up to about £9 million annually. Arsenal’s newly appointed sporting chief, Andrea Berta, is reportedly playing a key role in advancing the move and is providing firm backing to head coach Mikel Arteta.
Arteta’s position is still being questioned following another campaign without a trophy. Even after collecting a strong total of 89 points, Arsenal once again ended the season trailing a dominant Manchester City. The team’s last piece of silverware remains the 2020 FA Cup, claimed during Arteta’s initial spell in charge.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville applauded the team’s ongoing trust in Arteta, stating it’s uncommon in today’s game. He highlighted the team’s development, including their run to the Champions League semi-finals, and pointed out that the coach still enjoys strong backing from both leadership and supporters.
Gyökeres is believed to be keen on coming back to English football, and Arsenal appears to be in the leading position. Still, the expectations are rising on Arteta and the club’s transfer policy to finally secure meaningful achievements after several seasons without major titles.
