Chelsea
Chelsea are reportedly very close to sealing a shock move for one of Arsenal’s finest right wingers, taking full advantage of the player’s frustration over limited playing time at the Emirates.
Chelsea’s “interest” in Arsenal’s 18-year-old “starlet” Ethan Nwaneri has grown, with reports from July 5, 2025, stating the Blues are among several clubs tracking the “attacking midfielder’s” situation amid growing concerns regarding his limited appearances at the Emirates.
Nwaneri, whose current deal runs until June 2026, is believed to be asking for assurances over consistent first-team involvement, and delayed talks with Arsenal have created the possibility of a move, triggering both excitement and anxiety among supporters of both teams.
A product of the Hale End academy, Nwaneri made history by becoming the youngest-ever Premier League player at 15 years and 181 days in 2022 in a game against Brentford. During the 2024–25 campaign, he enjoyed a breakthrough season, tallying nine goals and two assists in 37 matches across all competitions, including two goals in a 5–1 League Cup victory over Bolton and a Champions League strike versus PSV.
Despite this, his game time dropped to just 42 minutes in Arsenal’s final eight fixtures after Bukayo Saka returned from injury, raising questions about his standing in Mikel Arteta’s plans, who continues to rely on key names such as Saka and Martin Ødegaard. Nwaneri’s ability to play as a right winger or central attacking midfielder has earned acclaim, with Joe Cole likening his dribbling to Lionel Messi’s, but Arsenal’s interest in adding attackers—including Chelsea’s Noni Madueke—could further restrict his minutes.
Chelsea, along with Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and RB Leipzig, are keeping close tabs, according to The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano. The Blues’ bold youth acquisition strategy under Clearlake Capital, highlighted by signings like Estêvão Willian, positions Nwaneri as a major target.
Romano posted on X that Chelsea’s pursuit depends on Arsenal’s inability to agree on a new contract, with Nwaneri’s representatives prioritizing assured first-team opportunities. A move might command a fee of €80–100 million, in line with his £47 million Transfermarkt value and reputation as one of England’s top young prospects. Chelsea’s strong ties with Arsenal, as seen in discussions for Madueke, could smooth talks, though the two situations are unrelated.
Arsenal still hope to secure Nwaneri’s renewal, with sources involved in discussions expressing optimism, per The Athletic. Talks were postponed until he turned 18 in March 2025 due to FA rules capping youth contracts at three years, but his insistence on a clear route to senior football complicates the matter.
Arteta has praised Nwaneri’s “calm and confident” character, but his measured method of integrating youth—seen in Myles Lewis-Skelly receiving more consistent minutes—has increased Nwaneri’s unease. Reactions on X are mixed, with @CFCPys stating “Chelsea snatching Nwaneri would be a coup,” while @GoonerViews appeals to Arsenal to “lock him down before it’s too late.”
The issue adds to Arsenal’s mounting concerns, as their title aspirations fade and transfer attention shifts to players like Viktor Gyökeres and Eberechi Eze. For Chelsea, Nwaneri fits their long-term strategy, but a packed forward line may pose similar challenges over playing time.
With Liverpool reeling from Diogo Jota’s injury and Bayern uncertain about Jamal Musiala’s condition, Nwaneri’s potential departure highlights the intense race for elite youth talent in the Premier League, with his future largely dependent on Arsenal proving he wil
l have a key role.
