SHOCKING NEWS: Ex-La liga coach set to become Manchester United head coach after Amorim dismissal.

Manchester United have decided to appoint former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernández as their new head coach, following the dismissal of Rúben Amorim earlier this week.

INEOS, who oversee football operations at the club, confirmed the decision on Tuesday morning, with Xavi expected to arrive in Manchester later this week. The 44-year-old is set to formally take charge of first-team duties from February, allowing the club time to complete contractual formalities and transitional arrangements.

The appointment brings an end to a period of uncertainty at Old Trafford after Amorim’s short and turbulent tenure came to an abrupt conclusion.

INEOS settle on long-term option

United’s leadership have been assessing managerial candidates since Amorim’s departure, with a focus on restoring stability and defining a clear football identity. Xavi quickly emerged as a leading contender due to his experience at elite level and his reputation for tactical structure and player development.

INEOS believe Xavi’s philosophy aligns with their vision of a modern, possession-based style built around discipline, youth development and long-term planning.

In a brief statement, the club said it was “confident the appointment represents the right step forward” as United look to reset both on and off the pitch.

Xavi’s background

Xavi enjoyed a decorated playing career with Barcelona and Spain, winning multiple Champions League and La Liga titles, as well as the World Cup and European Championship.

As a coach, he led Barcelona to domestic success during a challenging financial period for the club, earning praise for stabilising performances and integrating younger players into the first team.

His arrival at Manchester United will mark his first managerial role in the Premier League.

Transition period

United will continue with interim coaching arrangements until Xavi officially assumes control in February. The club believes the brief transition period will allow the new manager to assess the squad, outline his plans and prepare for the remainder of the season.

Xavi is expected to work closely with INEOS executives and the football department to shape recruitment strategy and long-term squad development.

Reaction and expectations

The appointment has generated strong reaction among supporters, with many welcoming the club’s move to secure a high-profile coach following weeks of instability.

Manchester United currently remain focused on maintaining league position while laying foundations for the next phase of their rebuild.

Xavi’s first competitive match in charge is expected to come in early February, pending confirmation from the club.

Manchester United have not yet confirmed the length of Xavi’s contract or the full details of his backroom staff.
