BREAKING NEWS: Barcelona Set to Pursue Another Manchester United Player on Loan After Failing to Trigger Marcus Rashford’s Release Clause.
The summer transfer window is not yet officially open, and already the relationship between FC Barcelona and Manchester United is generating headline after headline. In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves across European football, Barcelona have effectively walked away from permanently signing Marcus Rashford — despite his impressive loan season at Camp Nou — and are now plotting a bold pivot: moving for another Manchester United-connected player. Meanwhile, one blockbuster signing has already been confirmed, and the situation surrounding Rashford himself remains far from over.
The Rashford Release Clause Drama
To understand what is unfolding, one must first revisit the deal struck last summer. FC Barcelona and Manchester United agreed to a loan arrangement for Marcus Rashford until June 30, 2026, with the deal also establishing an option to buy the English forward. The buyout figure was widely reported at €30 million — a price that many considered an absolute bargain for a player of Rashford’s pedigree and Champions League experience.
Yet that seemingly affordable clause has proven to be a bridge too far for the financially stretched Catalan giants. Barcelona failed to activate the purchase option in Rashford’s loan agreement, meaning they no longer have the unilateral right to sign the forward for a fixed fee. The club had until March 31 to inform Manchester United of their intent to trigger the €30 million clause, but that date passed without any official move from the La Liga leaders.
The reasons are well-documented. Despite Rashford establishing himself as a regular contributor under Hansi Flick, the deal was complicated by La Liga’s strict financial regulations. While the €30 million transfer fee was considered manageable, the player’s substantial wage demands proved to be the sticking point for a club still navigating significant debt.
It is a bitter irony. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is understood to favour keeping Rashford long-term after his strong contribution during the loan spell, and Rashford is believed to be settled in Catalonia, having established himself in the squad and indicated privately that he intends to continue his career away from Old Trafford. Yet, football is ultimately a business, and Barcelona’s books simply could not accommodate the full package.
A Second Loan — and Complications
Rather than accepting defeat, Barcelona have reportedly proposed a fresh loan arrangement. Barcelona are reportedly planning to strike a second loan deal for Marcus Rashford, although the player is not thought to be aware of this strategy, which may not go down too well with Manchester United.
The Red Devils, for their part, are having none of it. Manchester United have received a new offer from Barcelona for Rashford, described as audacious. According to The Mirror, Barcelona has proposed a second loan spell for the 2026/27 season instead of exercising the buy option. Manchester United are considering accepting the loan offer, as Rashford is set to receive a pay increase due to United’s probable qualification for the Champions League, and the club wants to remove his salary from its payroll for another season.
Still, a significant complication looms. Rashford’s salary is reported to reach £325,000 per week on his contract, which runs until 2028. The prospect of United — now back in elite European competition — carrying that wage burden indefinitely is untenable, and the club’s preference remains a clean, permanent sale.
The Gordon Bombshell
Then came the development that reshuffled every assumption about Barcelona’s summer strategy. Just days ago, Barcelona announced the signing of England forward Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United on a five-year contract. The deal is worth an initial €70 million, potentially rising to over €80 million with add-ons.
Crucially, sources have been at pains to stress that Gordon’s arrival does not close the door on Rashford — or any other Manchester United-linked pursuit. Sources say the addition of Gordon does not rule out bringing Rashford back, but Barcelona would like to negotiate the fee, or another loan, with Manchester United.
Barcelona remain interested in another deal for Marcus Rashford regardless of the imminent signing of Anthony Gordon — but the Spanish club are targeting Julian Álvarez next. Every option is still on the table, and Barcelona have until June 15 to activate their £26m option to buy Rashford.
Rashford notched an impressive 28 goal contributions across all competitions for Barcelona as they reclaimed the LaLiga title from Real Madrid. Those are the numbers of a difference-maker, and Flick knows it.
What Happens Next?
The situation is genuinely unprecedented. A player who has delivered 28 goal contributions in a single season — in one of the world’s most demanding leagues — is being treated as a loan asset rather than a permanent signing, purely because of off-field financial machinations. The Manchester United loanee has already made it clear that he wants to remain at Barcelona next season and is believed to be willing to take a pay cut to make that happen. United, however, don’t want to negotiate another loan deal and believe the £26m option price is more than fair.
As Sky Sports framed it perfectly: “Could Rashford be playing for more than England glory at the World Cup? He might also be playing to convince Hansi Flick and the rest of the Barcelona hierarchy.”
With the FIFA World Cup 2026 about to kick off on home soil across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Rashford will have the biggest possible stage to make his case. And Barcelona, as ever, are watching — while simultaneously plotting their next loan deal from Old Trafford.
One thing is certain: the revolving door between Manchester United and FC Barcelona is spinning faster than ever, and the summer has barely begun.
