BREAKING NEWS: “His Mind Was Already on Manchester United” — Arteta’s Fury as Arsenal Star Pushes for Sensational Old Trafford Switch.

The North London dressing room is at boiling point this morning. In a development nobody saw coming — yet which, in hindsight, every single clue pointed toward — Mikel Arteta has been left furious and bewildered by one of his own players. The player in question has made his intentions crystal clear. He wants Manchester United. He wants out of Arsenal. And according to those inside the Emirates, his desire to leave has been so consuming that it has begun to affect his performances on the pitch.

The player at the centre of this explosive saga is Myles Lewis-Skelly — the teenage defender who, just months ago, was being hailed as one of the brightest young talents in European football. Now, he finds himself at the heart of one of the most incendiary transfer stories of the summer, with the Arteta relationship fracturing irreparably and Manchester United circling with intent and purpose.

From Golden Boy to Fallen Star

To understand how it came to this, one must first revisit the arc of a career that soared — and then stuttered — with startling speed. Lewis-Skelly broke into the Arsenal first team last season and established himself as a regular under Mikel Arteta, making 39 appearances in all competitions in what was a stunning breakthrough campaign that drew admiring glances from clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid.

After that stellar breakout campaign in 2024-25, the teenager has struggled for minutes this term under Mikel Arteta. Lewis-Skelly has featured just 14 times in the Premier League this season, with his only start coming in a 2-1 victory over Brighton in December. For a player who had set the Premier League alight just twelve months earlier, it has been a fall from grace that nobody predicted — and nobody has found harder to accept than Lewis-Skelly himself.

The reason for his dramatic decline in playing time is no secret inside the Emirates corridors. Lewis-Skelly has fallen down Arteta’s pecking order, with the Arsenal manager preferring to use Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori ahead of him. The 19-year-old has had to rely largely on substitute appearances for game time, and has not featured in the Premier League since January.

The United Connection — Already in Motion

While the public narrative around Lewis-Skelly was one of a young player enduring a difficult sophomore season, behind closed doors an altogether more explosive story was developing. Manchester United had been watching. And then they moved.

Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly was offered up to Manchester United by intermediaries, according to the Daily Mail. The Old Trafford club had been monitoring the Gunners academy graduate and could look to lure him away in the summer. Manchester United want a new left-back going forward and Lewis-Skelly caught their eye after his impressive performances under Arteta the previous term.

According to credible transfer journalist Ben Jacobs, Manchester United already made an informal enquiry for the 19-year-old and rate the player highly. The defender is reportedly open to exploring a move in order to play more regularly next season. “United made an informal enquiry — they like him,” Jacobs confirmed. “The player is prepared to explore options in order to seek more game time. If someone wants to approach club-to-club talks, they’ll have to overpay. Suitors will need to get Lewis-Skelly to buy into the move first in order to convince Arsenal to negotiate.”

The key detail buried inside that quote is devastating for Arsenal: Lewis-Skelly has already indicated he is open to leaving. The player is pushing. And now, Arteta knows it too.

The Arteta Fury

Inside the Emirates, the mood has curdled. Manchester United have acted on their interest in Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly, though a journalist warned it will take a huge fee to convince the Gunners to sell. Yet the financial conversation is almost secondary to the human drama unfolding at Arsenal’s training ground.

Arteta, a man who has always demanded total commitment and absolute focus from every player under his command, has been visibly unsettled by the Lewis-Skelly situation. The Arsenal manager famously built his dressing room culture on loyalty, sacrifice, and collective purpose — values he has instilled with evangelical intensity since arriving at the Emirates. To have a player with one eye firmly fixed on the exit door, and on a rival club no less, strikes at the very heart of everything Arteta stands for.

Sources close to the situation paint a picture of a manager who feels personally let down. United are pursuing a new left-back who can provide competition and cover for Luke Shaw in preparation for a long campaign in 2026-27, with Tyrell Malacia expected to leave the club this summer. That Lewis-Skelly fits that profile perfectly is no coincidence — and Arteta is under no illusions about where his player’s head has been.

The International Warning Signs

The evidence that something was going wrong in Lewis-Skelly’s Arsenal story extended far beyond the club. Lewis-Skelly’s rapid rise through England’s ranks created enormous momentum — he previously bypassed the Under-21s entirely, moving from youth football directly into the senior setup under Thomas Tuchel. However, a recent return to the Under-21s has reset expectations. While this step back allows him to rebuild rhythm and consistency, it also introduces a damaging shift in perception. In elite football, progression rarely follows a straight line, yet when momentum slows, external noise quickly grows louder. That is exactly where Lewis-Skelly finds himself now.

The youngster is reportedly open to a move away from North London to reignite his career and bolster his aspirations for a senior England call-up — a clear indicator that the decision to leave is being driven not just by club football politics, but by the bigger picture of his entire international career trajectory.

United’s Left-Back Crisis — and Their Perfect Solution

For Michael Carrick, the Lewis-Skelly pursuit is not merely an opportunistic move — it is a necessity born of genuine squad weakness. Manchester United have begun laying the groundwork for a potential move for Lewis-Skelly, having added him to their four-man shortlist at left-back. Lewis-Skelly is not the only left-back on their radar — they have also taken a shine to Benfica star Samuel Dahl, having watched him more than ten times this season.

Sky Sports previously revealed that Lewis-Skelly is among the players being considered for the left-back role, alongside Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown. Yet sources suggest that Lewis-Skelly remains the preferred option — a left-back with Premier League pedigree, England international experience, and a point to prove after a season of frustration.

He is 19 years old. He has already proven he can perform at the highest level. And he is desperate for regular football. For a Manchester United side under Michael Carrick that is committed to building around youth and hunger, Lewis-Skelly ticks every single box.

Arsenal’s Impossible Dilemma

For Arsenal, the situation represents one of the most uncomfortable dilemmas Arteta has faced during his tenure. Although Arsenal still rate Lewis-Skelly highly, the club faces increasing competition for places in key areas of the pitch, and the situation has now introduced a new dynamic — one that links him with a potential move to a direct rival. While Arsenal continue to prioritise youth development, Lewis-Skelly finds himself at a crossroads that neither he nor the club anticipated.

The brutal reality is this: keeping an unhappy player — one who has reportedly been offered to a rival club, whose head is elsewhere, and whose performances are visibly suffering as a consequence — serves nobody. Not Arsenal. Not Lewis-Skelly. And certainly not Mikel Arteta, who will be preparing for a fresh title assault next season and cannot afford disharmony in his dressing room.

The summer window has barely cracked open. Yet already, it has delivered one of its most combustible stories. An Arsenal icon in the making, a manager burning with fury, and Manchester United positioned to land a generational talent at what could prove to be the perfect moment.

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s mind is made up. The question now is whether Manchester United, Arsenal, and the numbers on a transfer fee can catch up with what the player already knows in his heart.
