BREAKING NEWS: “His Attitude Off the Pitch Is Unacceptable — I’ve Told the Board to Sell Him Immediately” — Carrick Drops Bombshell on Struggling Manchester United Star.

He scored goals. He contributed when called upon. He gave everything he had on the occasions his number was called. And yet, despite all of that, Michael Carrick has reached a verdict on Joshua Zirkzee that is as ruthless as it is final. The Manchester United manager has reportedly informed the Old Trafford board in the clearest possible terms: sell him. This summer. As soon as possible. No second chances. No sentiment. No exceptions.

In a development that will send shockwaves through the dressing room and across Europe, the man once hailed as the future of Manchester United’s attack has been handed his exit notice by a manager who has seen enough — not just of his performances, but of everything that surrounds them. The goals were appreciated. The attitude was not. And in Michael Carrick’s Manchester United, attitude is everything.

A Career at Old Trafford That Never Truly Launched

To fully appreciate the devastating finality of Carrick’s decision, one must first understand the journey that brought Joshua Zirkzee to this painful crossroads. When United signed the Dutch striker from Bologna in the summer of 2024 for £36 million, the expectation was electric. Tall, technically gifted, blessed with a unique combination of strength and touch, Zirkzee had torn Serie A apart and seemed perfectly suited to the demands of modern Premier League football.

The reality proved heartbreakingly different.

Zirkzee has proven to be an underwhelming signing for Manchester United since his move from Bologna. The Netherlands international forward has scored nine goals and given four assists in 71 appearances for United so far in his career — numbers that, while not catastrophic, represent a significant underperformance relative to the enormous promise he arrived with.

The 24-year-old managed only four starts in the Premier League for United this season. Then-manager Ruben Amorim used Zirkzee primarily as a substitute, and the situation did not change when Michael Carrick was appointed interim boss in January 2026. Carrick used Zirkzee just six times since becoming the United interim manager.

Six appearances. For a £36 million striker. In five months of football. The numbers speak of a player who has been quietly but decisively pushed to the very margins of the squad — and left there.

The Attitude That Broke the Camel’s Back

What transforms this story from a simple tale of underperformance into something far more serious is the reason behind Carrick’s personal conviction that Zirkzee must leave. It is not purely about goals. It is not purely about tactics or formations or positional fit. It is about attitude — the one currency at Manchester United under Carrick that cannot be bought, borrowed, or faked.

Zirkzee is said to feel “discouraged and disappointed by his situation in Manchester, partly due to the constant changes in the coaching staff that haven’t led to the hoped-for turnaround.” The forward rejected several offers in January and believed that he could be a success at United. However, with Carrick continuously ignoring him, Zirkzee now appears determined to move on and relaunch his career elsewhere.

Sources inside Carrington paint a picture of a player who, rather than responding to adversity with hunger and determination, has allowed frustration to seep into his body language, his training performances, and his interactions with staff and teammates. It is the kind of quiet disengagement that a manager of Carrick’s perceptiveness notices immediately — and refuses to tolerate.

The contrast with Kobbie Mainoo could not be more stark or more instructive. Zirkzee’s situation at United contrasts sharply with that of Kobbie Mainoo, who also struggled for regular playing time under Amorim. Mainoo wanted to leave on loan in the January transfer window, but the midfielder was persuaded to stay at Old Trafford. Under Carrick, the 21-year-old has flourished and is now one of the first names in the United starting line-up when fit and available.

Two players. Same period of adversity. Two completely different responses. Mainoo fought. Mainoo stayed. Mainoo flourished. Zirkzee disengaged. Zirkzee sulked. Zirkzee is leaving.

Carrick’s Clear-Out — A Culture Being Built

The Zirkzee decision is not an isolated incident. It is part of a broader, deliberate, and unapologetic cultural revolution that Carrick is engineering at Old Trafford this summer. The message from the United manager could not be clearer: talent alone is not enough. Mental fortitude, professional attitude, and unconditional commitment to the collective cause are non-negotiable requirements for anyone who wants to wear the red shirt next season.

This needs to be a ruthless summer at Manchester United. Despite only being appointed as the permanent boss recently, Carrick will go into next season with the opportunity to compete for the Premier League — and the chance to capitalise on enormous changes happening across the big six. Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham are all in flux. The chance to compete for the Premier League is there. Carrick needs several new additions — but he also needs to strip out those who do not fit the culture he is building.

The exits being planned are not random. Every single one is calculated. Every player being shown the door has been assessed against the same uncompromising standard — and found wanting. United have been linked with several central defenders already this summer as part of a comprehensive overhaul, with the squad being reshaped to suit Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 formation and his demand for players with the right mentality to match their technical quality.

In that world, a disengaged, frustrated striker who rejected January loan moves and sulked his way through the second half of the season has no place. No matter how many goals he scored. No matter how much the club paid for him two summers ago.

Juventus Waiting — Europe Circling

The irony of the situation is that Zirkzee, for all the difficulties of his Old Trafford career, remains a highly coveted commodity on the European transfer market. His underlying qualities — the technical ability, the positional intelligence, the physical profile — have never been in serious question. What has been questioned, at club after club, is whether his mindset matches his talent.

Serie A giants Juventus are keen on a 2026 summer deal for the Dutch forward, with the Italian club having monitored his situation closely throughout the second half of the season. For Juventus, the logic is straightforward: a 24-year-old striker with Premier League experience, Serie A pedigree, and a point to prove represents exactly the kind of project signing that can deliver enormous return on investment when placed in the right environment.

For Zirkzee, leaving United may ultimately prove to be the making of him. History is littered with players who needed a change of scenery, a fresh start, and a manager who believed in them unconditionally to unlock the potential that had been visible all along. Whether Juventus or another European destination provides that environment remains to be seen.

What Comes Next at Old Trafford

With Zirkzee’s departure now appearing inevitable, United will move to replace him with the quality and attitude Carrick demands. Carrick has already confirmed that Gonçalo Ramos is among the attacking targets being pursued this summer, with United looking to bring in a proven, physically imposing centre-forward to lead the line in the Champions League campaign ahead.

The rebuild is happening at pace and with ruthless clarity. Ederson and Sandro Tonali arriving to transform the midfield. Rafael Leao coming to electrify the left wing. Gonçalo Ramos arriving to lead the attack with the authority Zirkzee never quite managed to project. And now, the clearing of space — financial, physical, and psychological — that the Zirkzee exit will create.

Carrick is not building a squad. He is building a culture. And in that culture, Joshua Zirkzee — despite the goals, despite the contributions, despite the enormous fee paid for him — simply does not belong.

The exit door at Old Trafford is open. For Zirkzee, it is time to walk through it.
