L.F.C at risk of fixture chaos as Met Office issue update ahead of Man United clash
A long-standing rivalry match this season was postponed, and there is now a real concern that it might happen again.
Liverpool was originally scheduled to play Everton in the final league derby at Goodison Park in early December, but the match was canceled due to the disruptive effects of Storm Darragh, with mid-February suggested as a potential new date.
Now, Arne Slot’s team is facing the looming possibility of a repeat scenario as weather conditions once again threaten to disrupt the season. According to the Evening Standard on Saturday morning, there are growing concerns that tomorrow’s match between Liverpool and Manchester United could be delayed.
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for the Merseyside area, forecasting ‘snow and freezing rain,’ with public transport users warned to expect disruptions. In some parts of the UK, snowfall could reach up to 40cm.
The amber warning will remain in effect until 11:59 PM on Sunday, with the temperature predicted to be 1°C (feeling like -2°C) at 4:30 PM, the time the game is set to start.
If the match proceeds as planned, fans attending Anfield are advised to wear warm clothing and bring essentials like food, water, blankets, and ice scrapers for the trip.
Though it would be an unfortunate setback for Liverpool, safety remains the priority.
Currently, Liverpool has two matches per week scheduled until mid-February, when they are expected to have consecutive midweeks off, although one of these could be used for the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
If Liverpool is eliminated from the Champions League play-offs, the Manchester United match could potentially be rescheduled for next month, but only if Ruben Amorim’s team is not involved in the Europa League play-offs. If they are, the fixture might be postponed until April, reducing the available windows for rescheduling as the team might still be engaged in European and FA Cup competitions.
Both Liverpool fans and players would prefer the match to proceed as planned, especially considering their strong form while Manchester United struggles in 14th place after losing five of their last six league games.
However, safety concerns must take precedence, and if the weather proves too hazardous, the authorities may have no choice but to cancel the match to ensure the safety of the staff, spectators, and players.
Let’s hope the situation doesn’t reach that point, and Anfield will be filled with the sounds of 61,000 fans at 4:30 PM on Sunday.
