Bruno Fernandes’ post-match interview after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool went viral, with fans applauding the captain for his honest comments.

United’s 4-0 loss to Newcastle on December 30 marked their fourth consecutive defeat, leading many supporters to worry about their upcoming match against league leaders Liverpool at Anfield. However, the Red Devils delivered an improved performance, earning a draw against Arne Slot’s high-flying team.

Lisandro Martinez gave United an early advantage with a powerful strike, but Liverpool responded with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah. Amad Diallo later scored a well-earned equalizer, highlighting a performance that was much better than anything seen under manager Ruben Amorim this season.

The draw moved United up to 13th in the standings, ahead of West Ham on goal difference, and kept them seven points clear of the relegation zone.

In his Sky Sports interview, Fernandes expressed frustration with United’s inconsistency, acknowledging that he is “pretty upset” that the team hasn’t been able to consistently deliver this level of performance. He also gave a critical assessment of his own form.

“We’ve been justifiably criticized because our league position reflects our results,” Fernandes said. “We’ve lost too many points. Even today, we can’t be pleased with a draw because we need points more than they do.

“It’s a good result, a fair one. Both teams played intense, quality football. But I’m frustrated. If we can perform like this against Liverpool, the top team in the league, why can’t we do it every week?

“I’m frustrated with myself too because today felt like the first time in a while I put in a real performance. We need to demand more from ourselves if we want to achieve anything this season. We need to play with pride because what we’ve shown so far isn’t enough.”

United’s next challenge will be against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup third round, as they aim to defend their title, having beaten Manchester City in last year’s final at Wembley.
